The Iranian drones are open source, so you would think we could just copy it, but we cannot. It requires Chinese parts, and our defense industry cannot use Chinese parts.
Instead we make better American designed and built drones, that costs far, far more.

Our "improved drones" cost 35K per unit. We used a captured downed Iranian drone and reverse engineered it. It was not open source. Our drone has a much better guidance system and is smaller and has less range but it can hit mobile targets like tanks.

Iranian drones are actually open source. Most "Iranian drones" are made by proxies and use the open source of their design as a deniability factor. There is no need to reverse engineer anything, I am sure that the US Government has the actual design schematics.
Shahed uses Chinese parts, so while we can make it, it cannot be legally produced for the US military. Besides, the only thing that makes it better than Switchblade is the price.
The Switchblades are $50k to $170k+. The Shahed can be produced in the west for $7k. Labor is cheaper outside the west, but getting parts is often more expensive.
The Switchblade is a totally different design, not an improvement. It is better, but not 7 to 25 times better. So dollar for dollar, the Shahed is probably better. BUT, big but here, we have more money, so it is easy for us to spend more money on drones. We want better, even if it costs more. They need whatever they can afford.
The scary part is they can afford some reasonably good technology.
