WASHINGTON (AP) - More evidence of consumers' weary state and the nation's deteriorating job market came Thursday with reports that people continuing to draw unemployment benefits climbed to a 26-year high, while retail sales and orders to U.S. factories sank.

The number of newly laid-off people signing up for unemployment benefits last week dropped by 21,000 to 509,000, the Labor Department reported. Even with the drop - which was better than the increase economists were forecasting - the level of jobless applications was still quite high and pointed to a deeply troubled employment climate.

OK 4.09 million drawing unemployment benefits and our working age population is how many ? You do the math and figure up our actual unemployment rates.
Not counting the ones whose benefits may have ran out and still do not have work.

Out of about 70-100 million workers?

Around 6%.

6% Sounds close. Many countries in Europe are over 10% so we are lucky.

France was at 8% in 2006.

Germany is at 6%.

Denmark - 4%.

UK - 2.9%

Germany and France are the only two big ones I can remember that had double digit unemployment in the recent era - and conservatives seem to be unable to forget it, as they will be citing that for 100 years. You'd think they still would consider America to have double digit unemployment.

Here is the grid.

Canada I believe is around the same as us right now.

96 million possible workers. Take out the disabled the housewives who do not work, students , and usless management types, and other topfeeders. How many out of 96 million actually do work that produces stuff ?

I figure maybe 50-60 million at most are actually carrying this country.
Plus the immigrant labor, illegal included.
