Ga. governor says guns should be OK in airport
He suggests his own wife might want to carry gun for long terminal walks

ATLANTA - Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said Monday that guns should be allowed in public areas of the nation's busiest airport.

And he suggested his own wife might want to pack a firearm for long walks between the parking lot and the terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.

"If my wife wanted to carry a gun, if she was going from the parking lot, walking from one of those far parking lots to pick up a grandchild or something like that, I think that's a good idea, yes," he said Monday.

Earlier this year, Perdue, a Republican, signed legislation that allows Georgians who have passed criminal background checks to carry concealed weapons onto mass transit, as well as into state parks and restaurants that serve alcohol. The new law took effect July 1.

A legal battle quickly erupted over whether the law applies to public areas of Hartsfield-Jackson before travelers pass through security checkpoints.

'Gun-free zone'
On the day the new law took effect, Atlanta officials who oversee the airport declared it a "gun-free zone" and said anyone carrying a gun there could be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin argued that allowing guns could endanger people because airports remain attractive targets for terrorism.

Gun rights supporters filed a federal lawsuit challenging the designation, saying the airport qualifies as mass transportation and has restaurants that should be accessible under the new law.

Perdue said Monday he hasn't asked his legal counsel for guidance and was simply offering his own "lay opinion."

An airport official referred calls to the office of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, where a message was left seeking comment.

The law's sponsor, state Rep. Tim Bearden, called Perdue's comments "right on the money."

"People have a right to defend themselves. That is what this law is about," said Bearden, a Republican and former police officer.

A spokesman for Perdue said the governor has a gun permit but his wife does not.

A hearing is scheduled Aug. 11 in U.S. District Court for the lawsuit filed by GeorgiaCarry.org, which wants a restraining order to keep the airport from enforcing the gun ban.

Seriously the lack of gun laws in the US is truly amazing... If you guys like to blow each other up so much I guess I cant argue with that.... Just try not to kill the civilians or the tourists from Canada....although Georgia is such a shitty state that I doubt many tourists would visit it...

Every elementary student needs to be given a weapon.

People without guns should be shot on sight, and not shooting black people will be an equally heinous offense.

It never ceases to amaze me that people get all worked up over someone (who has passed a solid background check) carrying a gun. Why is this an issue?

They are not suggesting that people be allowed to carry a gun thru security checkpoints. They are not wanting people to be able to carry a gun onto the planes.

CK, have you ever been to this airport and seen how far a person has to walk to get to their car? The airport takes up almost 300 acres. Its a BIG place. And while there is security inside, out in the parking lot there is not nearly enough.

"although Georgia is such a shitty state that I doubt many tourists would visit it"

And what the fuck is that remark? Ever been to Georgia? You might try not being such a bigotted prick when you grow up.

This same attempt at hysteria was attempted a few years ago when Florida passed its new gun laws. There were all these ridiculous predictions that it would turn into a "wild west shootout" in the sunshine state.

News flash for ya, it didn't happen. In fact, many violent crime rates went down.

And I am sure that Florida is a favorite destination for canadian tourists. They didn't start shooting them.

Remember Solitary CK is a troll. Trolls come on to boards like this with no point other than to just stir sh*t up. I'm not sure why people on this board continue to engage him but they do. The irony here is this troll claims to have an Ivy League education.

Just because the community college he attended had poison ivy growing on campus, he thinks he went to an ivy league school?

Yeah right we need guns in bars. sheesh.

But just because alcohol is served should not be a reason to bar those with a CCW from carrying. For example, a restaurant that serves alcohol.

Perhaps we should have a law that anyone charged with any alcohol related crime loses their CC permit if they have one ?
And cannot gst one for 3-5 years either.

imho if you have a history of alc abuse you do not get a CC permit.

ie a DUI 5 years delay for each occurance, public drunk the same delay, etc.
convicted of domestic violence, the same thing.

OK, if your drunk in public you are banned from concealed carry for five years? That seems a bit over doing it. I would prefer just to keep guns out of bars. Bar owners have a right to property, and to kick people out for the reason of having a gun. If the bar owner wants to keep a gun for purpose of defense they are allowed, but they are also allowed to prevent other from having guns on their property.
