Antisemitism is deeply ingrained in European society, says EU official

We fight, We win
Antisemitism is a “deeply ingrained racism in European society” that poses an existential threat to the continent’s Jewish community and the fundamental aims of the European Union, an EU official has warned.

Michael O’Flaherty, the director of the bloc’s agency for fundamental rights, said it was worrying that only a third of the general population considered antisemitism a big problem, when there was no doubt “dramatic moments in our societies trigger antisemitic responses”.

He told the Guardian: “It happened with Covid, it’s happening now with the Russian aggression [in Ukraine] – and now it’s happening again. Media and civil society organisations warn of a rise of antisemitism as the crisis in the Middle East unfolds.

“I honestly think that with any big negative issue in our society, you’re going to find antisemitic tropes finding their way in there. It’s indicative of the extent … antisemitism is a deeply ingrained racism in European society.”

Many experts in hate crimes point to deeply rooted negative ideas about Jews that, though always present, surface at times of societal stress.

One recent study by the ADL found that anti-Jewish tropes remained entrenched in 10 European countries, with roughly one in four people harboring historically familiar antisemitic beliefs, particularly false beliefs about Jews and money, and Jews controlling governments.

Children's football club launches investigation after boy 'refuses to play against Jewish team'

North London-based Panthera FC has said it will not tolerate racism after match row

Investigation launched after boy's parents reportedly refused to let him play against Jewish team

The incident comes amid growing concerns of antisemitism in the UK and Europe

The Jewish News reported that Panthera FC had sent a message to its club members saying it would "not hesitate to take appropriate action, including removal from our club".

Its message reportedly added: "If you, as parents, harbour prejudice of any kind that could affect your child’s experience or our culture of inclusivity, then we must be honest – this may not be the right club for you."

It's an odd phenomenon to have a traditional, irrational hatred and bias toward a small group of people "just because".

With regard to this topic, one of the few countries that comported themselves well in WW2 was Denmark. They organized an effort to evacuate all Danish Jews to neutral Sweden when they received word a German invasion had breached their borders.

The US, us, we were awful. Another moment of shame.

There's an anti-semitism across the political spectrum but in Europe do anti-semetic progressives share the same reasoning as those in the states, that Jews and Israel are oppressors? Or is it deeper than that?
