DeSantis signs bill making it legal to kill ‘crack bears’ in self-defense

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Friday that makes it legal for people to kill “crack bears” in self-defense.

HB 87 allows people to use lethal force against bears as long as certain criteria are met. DeSantis did not comment on the bill specifically, announcing it in a news release alongside 13 other bills he signed.

A person can use lethal force against a bear as long as they believe that they, their pet, or their property are in imminent danger, they didn’t lure the bear with food or other attractants — including training dogs to hunt bears — and the person didn’t recklessly place themself into the dangerous situation.

We have always been allowed to kill a bear in self defense. If we are unprovoked attacked by a bear, we can legally defend ourselves.

This law adds the requirement that the bear needs to be a cocaine user... Not sure how that helps.

So if a bear is going to eat you, and you do not know if the bear has been using cocaine that day, then you can no longer defend yourself?

And if you do know the bear has been using cocaine, is it likely to be an unprovoked attack? If I am close enough to a bear to know about its drug use, I know enough to know to get away from the bear. It is beginning to sound like the bear killer provided the cocaine in question.

As with so many of DeSantis' laws, it makes no sense when you think about it.
