Around world, gun rules, and results, vary wildly

After a tragedy like the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, it's a statistic that is always trotted out. Compared to just about anywhere else with a stable, developed government — and many countries without even that — the more than 11,000 gun-related killings each year in the United States are simply off the charts.
To be sure, there are nations that are worse. But others see fewer gun homicide deaths in one year than the 27 people killed Dec. 14 in Newtown, Connecticut.

As Americans debate gun laws, people on both sides point to the experiences of other countries to support their arguments. Here's a look at two success stories — with two very different ways of thinking about gun ownership — and one cautionary tale.
___
JAPAN — THE NANNY STATE

Gunfire rings through the hills at a shooting range at the foot of Mount Fuji. There are few other places in Japan where you'll hear it.

In this country, guns are few and far between. And so is gun violence. Guns were used in only seven murders in Japan — a nation of about 130 million — in all of 2011, the most recent year for official statistics. According to police, more people — nine — were murdered with scissors.

Though its gun ownership rates are tiny compared to the United States, Japan has more than 120,000 registered gun owners and more than 400,000 registered firearms. So why is there so little gun violence?

"We have a very different way of looking at guns in Japan than people in the United States," said Tsutomu Uchida, who runs the Kanagawa Ohi Shooting Range, an Olympic-style training center for rifle enthusiasts. "In the U.S., people believe they have a right to own a gun. In Japan, we don't have that right. So our point of departure is completely different."

...

Virtually all handgun-related crime is attributable to gangsters, who obtain them on the black market.

...

SWITZERLAND — GUNS AND PEACE

The country's 8 million people own about 2.3 million firearms. But firearms were used in just 24 Swiss homicides in 2009, a rate of about 0.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. The U.S. rate that year was about 11 times higher.

the question begs...is it the guns or the people.

Japan, France and England have 4x lower murder rates!
Fact
Americans exhibit a culture of violence. For years they have been told that they, as a nation, are stronger than they really are. They are raised on confrontation and a 'You cant say/do that to me because I am american.'
That violent or beligerent mindset has been carried to a personal level.
Add to that the intense propaganda that there are people in the world who are out to destroy you, and the 'requirement' to be frightened and that trigger finger gets pretty itchy. Now into that mix add the tremendous resentment of the blacks, the drugs, the John Wayne effect and you finish up with 300 million people ready to kill each other for simply parking their cars in the wrong place.
But... you cant ban people, so you must try to do what you can. Stop the sale of guns into private hands, invest in education and society and use the undoubted talent for propaganda for good.

So how do guns come into the conversation?
You don't like guns and wish them banned, even though this will empower criminals?
God uneducated people like you are slow
Place with way less guns have way less murders, lax enforced foolish laws aside!

The answer?

How about it's another Yurtroll lie?

Switzerland's gun homicide rate was anything but "the lowest."

It was fourth highest.

Only Greece, Ireland and the United States had higher rates.

(Switzerland also has the seventh highest suicide rate and the third highest rate of gun-related suicide, according to the GunPolicy.org data. In the latter case, only the United States and Finland had higher rates. Switzerland and Italy were tied for second for the rate of unintentional gun deaths; the United States was number one.)

"Guns kept at home are not necessarily dangerous in the streets, but mostly in situations that happen at home, such as suicide and murder of family members (especially females). In this respect, Switzerland has one of the highest proportions in the Western world," said Martin Killias, professor of criminology and criminal law at the University of Zurich Law School.

So here's the correct numbers and rankings from the UN:

Country and year of most recent data Number of firearm homicides that year Odds of being murdered with a firearm that year Odds of being murdered that year Percent homicides involving a firearm
United States ('10) 9,960 1 in 31,000 1 in 24,000 67.5%
Switzerland ('04) 57 1 in 125,000 1 in 91,000 72.2%
Canada ('09) 173 1 in 200,000 1 in 56,000 32.0%
Finland ('09) 24 1 in 250,000 1 in 43,000 19.8%
Sweden ('04) 37 1 in 250,000 1 in 83,000 33.9%
Spain ('09) 90 1 in 500,000 1 in 111,000 21.8%
Germany ('10) 158 1 in 500,000 1 in 125,000 26.3%
Israel ('07) 6 1 in 1,000,000 1 in 53,000 11.7%
Australia ('09) 30 1 in 1,000,000 1 in 83,000 11.5%
England & Wales ('10) 41 1 in 1,000,000 1 in 83,000 6.6%
Japan ('08) 11 more than 1 in 1,000,000 1 in 200,000 1.8%

It is pointless to argue about which country is this or that. The fact is that your country kills too many of its own citizens (many legally, of course). If anyone actually cared for the sanctity of life (all life) then you would be firing your comments at those who support the status quo, not in a forum such as this, but in congress or on the stump.
Obama is scratching at the surface and the anti americans (anti Obama) will be sitting like vultures in a tree knowing that whatever Obama does, they will ensure gun crime continues so they can take their stubby fingers from their fat, hairy, yank arses and point them in phoney derision at the President of America.

America kills its own people. Personally I couldn't care less, but from a humanistic view point you need to grow a few brains, my friends. You need to outlaw ALL guns, outlaw the NRA and ensure nothing takes its place.
Oh, and try to forget that your shit dont stink.

God uneducated people like you are slow

But you contradict yourself.
When Britain had more guns there were less murders.
In 1998 guns were banned.

Now there are less guns but more murders, more gun crime and the same number of mass shootings!

In the 15 years since the UK gun ban there have been more police officers shot on duty than in the 25 years preceding the ban.

Care to explain?

It's clear you hate Americans .
All your opinions are based on mindless hate.
You are a hater.
Just like the KKK, the Nazis and combat 18.

Your opinions have no value to American politics.

Know your place filth foreigner.
