Asian Americans feel particularly targeted by new laws criminalizing those who assist

WASHINGTON (AP) — For a century, the League of Women Voters in Florida formed bonds with marginalized residents by helping them register to vote — and, in recent years, those efforts have extended to the growing Asian American and Asian immigrant communities.

But a state law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in May would have forced the group to alter its strategy.

A federal judge blocked the provision this week. But its passage reflects the effort by DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate, and other GOP leaders to crack down on access to the ballot. Florida is one of at least six states, including Georgia and Texas, where Republicans have enacted voting rules since 2021 that created or boosted criminal penalties and fines for individuals and groups that assist voters. Several of those laws are also facing legal challenges.

In states where penalties are getting tougher, the developments have sowed fear and confusion among groups that provide translators, voter registration help and assistance with mail-in balloting — roles that voting rights advocates say are vital for Asian communities in particular.

from your link...
The legislation would have imposed a $50,000 fine on third-party voter registration organizations if the staff or volunteers who handle or collect the forms have been convicted of a felony or are not U.S. citizens.
????....why do you object to saying felons and non citizens should not be helping people register to vote.....

The GOP-tard goal is to restrict the vote to the chosen few who can afford to take time off to get the right kind of ID and take a day off to vote on a Tuesday, aka, rich, white folk.

I forsee a law in red states allowing employers to fire employees for taking time off on November 8th to vote. We already know the trumptards want to eliminate mail-in voting so threatening workers with termination for time off on voting Tuesday will be the nail in the coffin for a free and fair vote. It'll be the modern Jim Crow - I'm certain this current trumptard SCOTUS will support it.

No wonder why minorities have no drivers license because it’s too difficult and you wonder why minorities are leaving the democrats in droves?

I would ask, this question: Assist how? Simply registering them to vote? I have no problem. Helping them fill out registration forms? Nah. To easy to get partisan groups to pressure or even mark the ballot to put the person in a particular party. Assisting persons to evade legal restrictions on registration? Definitely a big NO! (Remember the group ACORN? They did all of that and more).

Then let's make election day a holiday with pay nationwide. Fixes that problem. As for ID. The kind of ID you need to vote is the same as you need to purchase alcohol, pot, a gun, open a checking account, or do hundreds of other activities in society. What's the problem there?

If you're in a situation where you take public transportation to work and can't afford a vehicle there is no reason to have a drivers' license. Taking time off from work to vote and time off on Tuesday (a weekday) to vote is difficult as well. These are the people the trumptard draconian voting laws are targeting. GOP-tards know their ideas are unpopular and therefore the more people voting means the GOP does worse in elections. These are facts.

Funny how blacks have the highest percentage of eligible voters that actually vote since it’s so “HARD” for them.

Yet they can’t get an ID?

You guys are idiots

The problem is that working poor folk need to take time off to get the right kind of ID and need time off on Tuesday to vote. The working poor who take public transportation to work and can't afford a vehicle have no reason to find a drivers' license and would have to take time off on a weekday to go to a government office to get ID. Outlawing mail-in voting and making it more difficult to vote is the GOP's wet dream.

"Blacks have the highest percentage of eligible voters"? Where do you get your information? Q-Anon rallies, no doubt.

Oh, so poor people don't have drivers licenses, or other ID to function in society hum?

I guess you think like those Whites in Berkeley do...

SEE! Going to a major university makes you stupid!

You mean they are trying to stop voter fraud where groups tell people who to vote for

Recent polls have found that a majority of Americans believe that being woke—which they understand to mean “to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices”—is a positive thing

LMAO. Look at guno trying to reclaim the narrative. We all know what woke is...woke is marketing tranny fluid. Go ahead and own that.

How come only white people seem to have no problem registering to vote?

Are you telling us white people are smarter?

They do this on college campuses all the time.
