Noah Lear, a 16-year-old Ohio native who suffered injuries during a pickup basketball game, died early Wednesday.

Jake Furr of the Telegraph-Forum (via USA Today High School Sports) reported that while playing with friends at the Calvary Baptist Church, Lear was struck in the head and neck area by a basketball support pole, backboard and rim when the support pole snapped after a dunk attempt.

The report noted the injuries suffered in the accident caused damage to the region of his brain that controls heartbeat and blood pressure. That caused his family to move him into hospice care.

Middle Tennessee State pulls off stunning upset of Michigan State: In arguably the most stunning upset in the history of the NCAA Tournament, No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee State took down No. 2 seed Michigan State, 90-81, at the Scottrade Center on Friday afternoon.

In a spellbinding game that saw the Spartans throw numerous haymakers in a second-half comeback attempt only to see Middle Tennessee come up with every response imaginable, the Blue Raiders became another No. 15 seed to win a first-round game since the field expanded to 64.

Though a 15 seed advancing isn’t uncharted territory, this one was particularly stunning. Not just because the Spartans arguably should have been a No. 1 seed and were one of the betting favorites to win the national championship. Not just because Tom Izzo is one of the best tournament coaches in college basketball history. And not just because they have the probable national player of the year in senior Denzel Valentine, who went 5-for-12 from the field with six turnovers.
