Camus: ‘Should I kill myself, or have a cup of coffee?’

Camus turned to the question of the value of life and whether it is worth living. As he memorably puts it, echoing Russian writer Anton Chekhov, the fundamental question is: ‘Should I kill myself, or have a cup of coffee?’ (Writing a century before Camus, Chekhov wrote: ‘What fine weather today! Can’t decide whether to have a cup of tea or hang myself.’)

Like Friedrich Nietzsche before him, who proclaimed famously that God is dead, Camus realised that traditional widespread Christian belief was waning in Europe. More and more people, himself included, found themselves unable to believe in God or in ideas like objective morality and divine purpose.
