CAN WE DE-COMMERCIALIZE HOLIDAYS

without destroying our economy

we have a consumer based economy with upswings in buying and travel supported by holidays

birthdays and anniversaries contribute

gift giving seems to be entrenched (the more expensive the gift the more it is supposed to mean) in our society

with serious encouragement from gift manufacturers

now that the economy is so screwed up, maybe this is the time to reevaluate

Actually, with the economic conditions we currently have, it is the worst thing in the world to stop buying as much. We should actually go the other direction and encourage more buying and spending of private sector money.

Maybe we should give New Year's presents too?

or we could set a match to the private sector and let them claim the insurance money and start over with more modern factories...or move out of the nation completely

capitalism and socialism do not work - most agree on that

the question is - what blend works best

shipping jobs out of the nation works best for the manufacturing sector

keeping jobs here works best for the service sector

problem is, soon there will only be jobs in the service sector and government

I disagree. I think unbridled capitalism works better than anything that man has ever tried. Problem is, people get jealous and want to start fucking with it. That's what has wound us up in the mess we're currently in.

Socialism will work in a small isolated community, because there is no need for incentive to achieve and succeed. People of a small isolated group are content to have what they have, and never feel the need to strive for more. It is when socialism is tried in larger metropolitan industrialized nations, that you run into problems. It breeds corruption through the 'ruling class' and contempt from the people at the bottom, and eventually turns into tyranny, then into revolt.

America needs to get back to doing what we did in the 1940's and 1950's, leading the world in manufacturing and technology. We are becoming a largely service oriented economy, and when people don't have money, they can't afford services. We import far more than we export, and that needs to change. It can't change unless we take a pragmatic approach to changing it, instead of constantly haranguing Corporate America, then bailing them out.

check the history of the first part of the 20th century - rampant capitalism destroyed more than it created

but i do not expect you to agree with that, as when i was younger i would not have agreed either

Don, I am almost 50 years old, not really "young" by any stretch. I don't understand what you mean, the first part of the 20th century is when America became the greatest and strongest nation the world has ever known. Most of it was the result of free market capitalism. There is no end to the number of inventions we are responsible for, through entrepreneurial capitalist spirit and ingenuity.

Are you talking about the environment? Yes, we did succeed in helping to destroy the environment through the years, mostly because of things we didn't know and had to learn the hard way, however, we are now on the cutting edge in helping to clean up the environment, and it will be American capitalism which will lead the way in that as well, if it's not killed off by Communist Socialists who want to destroy it.

My daughters and family got pretty upset with me a few years ago. I was like Don, I felt like Christmas had simply become "too commercial" and lost it's true meaning. So, I decided one year, not to buy or give presents until after December 25th. The idea being, we could all benefit from the "After Christmas Sales" and still have our tradition. We won't talk about how it ended up. :(

i would prefer cash in small bills and non-sequential order...:)

You probably should've told them beforehand.
