I think it has someting to do with them feeling looked down upon by the educated class. It's like, wow, she doesn't know who's in NAFTA... it would really piss off those "elites" (college graduates) if we got one of ours in there. you know, it's ugly, but at its heart it's simple class envy.
The question is; does the educated class look down upon the uneducated class? And I think that's a complicated question. Sure i look down on a fool who doesn't know africa isn't a country. I looked down on her when I realized she didn't know what the bush doctrine is. But I wouldn't necessarily look down on someone who wasn't running for vp who didn't know those things...well at least the second one. What I do scorn, is when a person like those voters are racist, or they gay bash. It's like Joe the plumber, an obvious racist, and him I do look down on. He's a fucking moron who gets off on feeling superior to an educated black man just because he's white. So I think it depends. But I think they look down on themselves...they feel self-conscious because of their lack of education so they project that self-hate onto others, and then resent the others for the feelings they aren't even sure are there.
But the bottom line is, they would take great glee in installing a moron like Palin, a dangerous, deluded, fool, into the Presidency, just to "show those elites". And that's what makes them a real problem. Universal access to higher education would go a long way, but you'll never see a con back that, because an educated electorate would spell their demise.
