Anyone ask a Democrat what their policy agenda is? You’ll get a blank stare and “BUT TRUMP!”

Cory Booker’s sad stunt epitomizes Democrats’ empty agenda

Sen. Cory Booker’s pointless imitation filibuster epitomizes Democrats’ pathetic incoherence in the wake of last November’s defeats.

The New Jerseyan took to the floor not to achieve something, or even to oppose anything in particular, but as a stunt to symbolize how these are not normal times.

Which, actually, nobody who paid any attention denies.

The self-promoting, 25-hour marathon drew a few curious viewers online, and might have spoken to those in the party’s left-wing base who are still fuming that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) didn’t force a government shutdown last month.

But it did nothing to thwart the Senate GOP majority or slow the Trump agenda.

And it certainly didn’t win back a single swing voter.

Such symbolic performances are as onanistic as politics gets, but that’s where Dems are right now.

Sen. Spartacus’ filibuster folly was played-out performative nonsense

Though it is a competitive category, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., may be the perfect personification of the utter political impotence of today’s Democratic Party.

On Monday and Tuesday, for reasons that remain unclear, Senator Spartacus took the floor of the upper house and talked for over 24 hours straight in a filibuster that could have come out of a movie.

In fact, it did come out of a movie, one called "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," in which Jimmy Stewart played a senator making a marathon speech that came out 85 years ago.

That is exactly how old Booker’s performative nonsense felt this week.

Further precedent for the talk-a-thon came from segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, whose 1957 record for longwindedness Booker smashed.

For anyone paying attention, and frankly, that was likely a very small number of people, the question while Booker prattled on and on was why? Was there some purpose to this diatribe, or was it essentially a political TikTok challenge?

Call me lazy if you want, but in preparing this column I did not actually watch or read all 25 hours of Babblin' Booker’s remarks. If there were five people in the world who did, I would be shocked.

From the highlights, so to speak, we mostly see flailing arms and crazy-eyed proclamations that the Trump administration "is not normal," and a bizarre confession that might have been the performance’s most telling moment.

"I confess that I have been imperfect." Booker solemnly intoned. "I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'"

Two things stand out here. One is the religiosity of his rhetoric. He could almost be at Mass beating his chest three times as he spoke. The other is the idea that extraordinary measures must be taken to stop Trump, a kind of "by any means necessary" approach.

Even the use of the filibuster itself betrayed this. After all, not long ago, Democrats insisted that this archaic Senate procedure is racist and must be abolished.

Couldn’t have been that “sad” if it pissed off the NYP, obviously got under their skin

How so?
Did you watch?... I really am curious why you think he was awesome...

I didn't watch for 24+ hours. I probably watched about 3 total hours, at various times - toward the beginning, middle & I watched the last hour or so. He was strong every time I tuned in. Not just "filling time." Speaking with passion, about real issues.

He wasn't talking for MAGA's, so I don't expect them to have a positive reaction. Democrats were absolutely galvanized. It was the moment that they needed.

What was it that impressed you... What was it that you needed to hear or democrats needed to hear? Why
Wouldn't he be talking to all Americans...not just Democrats?

He never moved for 25 hours? That would be impressive... Kind of silly but impressive... (I watched a twenty four hour chef competition...but that they didn't go without breaks...)
He moved, to the left, to the right, forward, backward, but never away from the podium, and he didn’t sit, he was a college All American in football so he knew how to train himself

And he made his point, drawing attention, which would seem significant given the Democrats are getting upset with Schumer

Performative activism or politics, is nothing but street theater or online displays. It has no depth or usefulness. Often, it results in people being turned against the actors.

An example of this is the End Oil movement in Europe. This group glues their hand to something where they are obstructing others and forcing attention on themselves. They throw soup on paintings or do other forms of public vandalism or graffiti.

Instead of gaining support for their cause, they end up arrested and jailed. People inconvenienced by their antics see them negatively and cheer when they lose.

In a very real sense, performative politics is simply childish acting out that has no real or lasting value. It's simply a tantrum thrown by those involved in it.

I told you.

No matter what he said, MAGA's would be dismissive. It's the speech Dems needed, and the voice they needed. It was a moment in history.

I loved it.

No, he made a long and never to be remembered for its content speech that was all spectacle, no substance. It was a true meaningless gesture.

But I ask why you loved it and what he said that was so important... You don't know that everybody who isn't democrat would be dismissive... It's not a moment in history just because he spoke for a really long time... Not if he really didn't say anything important enough for you to talk about... Apparently you didn't love it that much...

Guess you completely missed "Speaking with passion, about real issues." Read more carefully next time.

And you're proving my point about MAGA's being dismissive. Wonderfully.

If you didn't or won't watch any of the speech, I have no idea at all why you're even commenting on it.

If he never took a break, then that was impressive.... Not the smartest thing to do but impressive... So it was a stunt... Gotcha.I don't think being in All American had anything to do with it though...;)

Speaking with passion about issues doesn't tell me anything, though...That's fine...if you don't want to talk about specifics I'll respect that... (However... I'm being the opposite of dismissive...I'm asking questions because you said it was awesome....You're the one dismissing them...)
