Now there's a "D" saying it too?

Bredesen balks at conditions tied to federal package, long-term costs

Tennessee could reject a portion of the $787 billion economic stimulus package out of concerns that it would force the state to raise taxes on businesses in the future.

At the National Governors Association meetings in Washington, D.C., Gov. Phil Bredesen said this week that he might turn down relief for unemployed workers worth an estimated $143 million because of conditions placed on the money by Congress.

The stimulus package would also raise unemployment benefits by $25 a week for all workers, but in addition, lawmakers want states to expand the pool of people who can apply for benefits. That would put more pressure on an unemployment trust fund that is already trying to stave off insolvency.

Nice to see that we still have some fiscal minded Democrats.

LOL $25 a week

And only a fool would scoff at a governor who considers that would be
$25.00 X How many people

"More Tennesseans are exhausting their six months of state unemployment benefits and moving into federal benefits. Between July and mid-January, Tennesseans receiving federal unemployment quadrupled to almost 42,000. Almost 12,000 of that jump came in January.

"The first extension was in July, so as more people exhaust their state entitlement, more and more are going on the extensions," said Marie Moss, director of the state's unemployment insurance program.

And the ranks of the jobless keep growing. On Friday, national figures showed that 598,000 jobs were eliminated in January, the most since the end of 1974. In Tennessee, 87,254 new claims for jobless benefits were filed in January."

Governor's are more attached to region than party, just like there are some enthusiastically pro-stimulus governors like Schwarzenegger and Crist.
