Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) claimed in a new op-ed that President Joe Biden, a “mentor and friend,” seemed to not recognize him at a recent event.

Moulton is now on a growing list of Democratic lawmakers who have urged Biden to drop his reelection campaign amid concerns about his age and stamina. The president has thus far insisted he’s staying in the race.

In a Boston Globe op-ed published Friday, Moulton wrote about his warm relationship with Biden, recalling the president held a rally for him during his primary race in 2014. He also said Biden has mentored him on the inner workings of Congress in meetings and by phone.

“He held a big rally for my general election campaign in Lynn, and I have treasured him as a mentor and friend ever since,” Moulton wrote.

The lawmaker claimed, however, that the Biden he saw this year at a D-Day anniversary event was not the same man.

“More recently, I saw him in a small group at Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. For the first time, he didn’t seem to recognize me. Of course, that can happen as anyone ages, but as I watched the disastrous debate a few weeks ago, I have to admit that what I saw in Normandy was part of a deeper problem,” he wrote.

Moulton said Biden has “mastered” the presidency and praised him on a number of efforts while in office, but argued that he cannot defeat Donald Trump in November, especially in light of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

“The harsh reality is that all the characteristics that have made Biden an irrepressible force — the energy, the vitality, the sharp, scrappy wit — are flickering,” the lawmaker wrote.
