“The pardon was unpardonable,” Holtzman says today. “The pardon created a double standard of justice: one for the high and mighty in this country and another for everybody else.”

Half a century later, she still suspects that Ford’s motives were less noble than are often portrayed and worries that he set a dangerous precedent for the likes of Donald Trump.
