FOXSPEWS: Hastert Staying Could Cost An Additional Fifty Seats In House

Yeah, keeping Hastert on as House Speaker could have a devastating affect on the composition of the House--dropping by as many as 50 Seats if he remains. Yet Bush and Cheney are still supportive of him. I guess Bush is trying to show that he really doesn't pay any attention to polls, but if that is the case, why would the Republicans themselves be polling here???? Sure looks like Hastert will be gone within the week to me. The leadership really can't handle this kind of loss...can they???

Internal Poll Suggests Hastert Could Devastate GOP

Thursday, October 05, 2006

WASHINGTON — House Republican candidates will suffer massive losses if House Speaker Dennis Hastert remains speaker until Election Day, according to internal polling data from a prominent GOP pollster, FOX News has learned.

"The data suggests Americans have bailed on the speaker," a Republican source briefed on the polling data told FOX News. "And the difference could be between a 20-seat loss and 50-seat loss."

Most GOP lawmakers have stood by Hastert, pending a full airing of the facts in his handling of the Mark Foley affair, in which the former Florida representative was caught exchanging salacious messages with teen pages in Congress. The new polling data, however, suggests that many voters already have made up their minds.

The GOP source told FOX News that the internal data had not been widely shared among Republican leaders, but as awareness of it spreads calculations about Hastert's tenure may change. The source described the pollster who did the survey as "authoritative," and said once the numbers are presented, it "could change the focus" on whether the speaker remains in power.

While internal GOP polls show trouble for Republicans, the newest AP/Ipsos poll also showed that half of likely voters say the Foley scandal will be "very or extremely important" when it comes time to vote on Nov. 7. By nearly a 2-1 ratio, voters say Democrats are better at combating corruption.

This is exactly why I have been saying, I hope he will stay!

Although I am starting to feel like there may be another shoe to drop... against the Democrats... they need to be very carefull here!

Something fishy is going on; you may be right!

50 seats? Holy tectonic shift, Batman!

Honestly, I don't think that's terribly likely. Methinks the Rupert Murdoch channel is simply trying to whip the froth up even more

Hard to believe isn't it, since most polls and commentators are in agreement that there are only about 16 seats or races that this has affected so far. But it is nice to see them getting all reactive. They do though seem to be admitting that even if he goes they still lose 20 seats, so it sort of hard to know what to make of this. The title here is sort of misleading I meant to make it only 30 seats because 50 - 20 is 30 but I miswrote and there is no way to edit the title, soooooo...

How many more seats come up in 2008 with Bush still at the helm till then ?
Just another 2 years folks and the repubs will be history for anothe 15-20. Again ;)
