A critical part of this unfortunate story is the question posed by many of the protesters: when the Left starts acting like the Right, what remains for 'progressive' people to hold on to? An elected Left government in power for 30 years is a rare thing indeed. But are the exigencies of globalization and the need for global capital so important that they can force the Left to sacrifice what has traditionally been its very base--peasants and poor people?

What's also grossly underestimated here--I can find no other word for it--is the sense of betrayal, the heartbreak and the disillusion of those who have believed in the Left and been its most ardent supporters. The conclusion seems clear: economic globalization does not, indeed cannot, benefit the poor.

There is no more anti-left position that sells out the poor than protectionism. Protectionism at its base is something the global noahide elite try to push on the poor in order so that they can push up their profits.

Asshate forgets that liberalism was founded upon the merits of free trade and capitalism. It might have killed the early republic with its other ideals, but I have to give liberalism credit for what used to be its brilliant economic policy. If it is still free trade, then good for it. If not, then fuck it.

But this is fascism, people being forced off their property so it can be used by companies. That's not freedom, you douchey stain.

Protectionism is what made this country great.

It's fascism to force a person not to trade with someone just because they're a foreigner. It's just to support big business, so that they won't have any competition, to the detriment of the average American.

International trade was not an important part of the economy until about the 1900's because of travel costs. It's also interesting that America only became a great nation after WWII and after it had eased up signifigantly on the tariffs. Protectionism robbed America of its first 150 years.

But we were sitting upon a base of developed industries which evolved in a protected environment. Damn, you 're stupid.
