God fucking dammit - by-election heading to runoff

FUCK THE POLICE

911 EVERY DAY
God damn the runoff system. God damn it to hell. The Democrats came up just a few votes short of winning another seat in the house, and also having the majority of the seats in Mississippi for the first time in a decade. But now there's going to be another two months for Republicans to bombast the people with lying ads that portrays him as a satan-worshipping liberal, and he will lose the runoff.

(The Politico) Democrats came extremely close to picking up a heavily Republican House seat in the heart of the conservative Deep South, but their party's nominee came up several hundred votes short of outright winning tonight's special election to succeed former GOP Rep. Roger Wicker.

Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, a Democrat, led Southaven mayor Greg Davis (R) in tonight's special election in a ruby-red north Mississippi district, but just fell short of the 50 percent of the vote necessary to avoid a runoff.

With 459 of 462 precincts reporting, Childers had 49 percent of the vote to Davis' 47 percent. The Associated Press reported that the race will be heading to a runoff, which will be held on May 13.

The results are encouraging news for Democrats, who never expected to contest a district that re-elected Wicker by overwhelming margins since he first came to Congress. The race's closeness forced the National Republican Congressional Committee to spend nearly $300,000 in one of the most heavily conservative parts of the country - despite facing a serious financial shortage this election cycle.

The NRCC recently went on an advertising blitz accusing Childers of failing to implement policies to prevent the mistreatment and neglect of seniors at the nursing home his family runs.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, meanwhile, has poured in about $142,000.

Both party committees will now undoubtedly be preparing to spend additional funds for a highly-competitive runoff, which no one anticipated just weeks ago.
