Hillbilly Elegy director Ron Howard says he’s ‘surprised and disappointed’ by JD Vance ‘We didn’t talk a lot of politics when we were making the movie

“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”

Hillbilly Elegy director Ron Howard has taken a swipe at JD Vance, suggesting that Donald Trump’s Republican running mate has “changed” since he first met him.

Earlier this year, Vance was selected to be Trump’s possible vice president in the 2024 US presidential election race – but before his political career, he was known for being the author of memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which was later adapted into a Netflix film of the same name.

Since being announced as Trump’s running mate, Vance has been criticized for comments that saw him refer to women, such as Trump’s presidential rival Kamala Harris, as “childless cat ladies”. This prompted swift backlash and accusations of sexism, with Vance claiming the remarks were made in “sarcasm”.

While Hillbilly Elegy star Glenn Close, who played grandmother Mawmaw in the movie, made her own subtle dig at Vance, Howard has now shared his view on the controversial figure after being questioned about him during an appearance at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Opie is feeling the far left pressure from Hollywood.

It's a good movie. I never read the book. Regardless, it's a movie and a book. People change and Vance certainly has flip-flopped all over the place. He used to be against Trump, now he supports an American RW authoritarian state. Go figure.

I watched Bill Maher's latest show where he condemned the far left for their attacks on Cheryl Hines for not throwing her husband under the bus for aligning with Trump. Maher's views are often don't align with my own, especially where RFK Jr is concerned, but I readily agree with him here.
In some ways this goes to the idea of burning Beatle records because John Lennon said they were more famous than Jesus or doing the same for Micheal Jackson records because he was a pedo. There's the music and there's the views and actions of those who created the music.

J.D. Vance has proved to be a scumbag. His views on women are misogynistic and he's supporting a racist autocrat. These anti-American views do not impact the story of the movie or, presumably, his book.

Vance is known these days for being a far-right politician. He's expressed his opposition to marriage equality. He's opposed abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. He's aimed to criminalize gender-affirming care for minors.

All of that is in stark contrast to the JD Vance who Nelson knew for more than a decade. The JD Vance who was at Nelson's bedside with homemade baked goods after they went through a gender transition-related surgery. The friend who called Donald Trump a racist and a “morally reprehensible human being.”

The Moral Collapse of J. D. Vance

Instead of a truth-teller in his own community, Vance as a candidate has become a contemptible and cringe-inducing clown.
What do we call a man who turns on everything he once claimed to believe? For a practitioner of petty and self-serving duplicity, we use “sellout” or “backstabber.” (Sometimes we impugn the animal kingdom and call him a rat, a skunk, or a weasel.) For grand betrayals of weightier loyalties—country and faith—we invoke the more solemn terms of “traitor” or “apostate.”

But what should we call J. D. Vance, the self-described hillbilly turned Marine turned Ivy League law-school graduate turned venture capitalist turned Senate candidate? Words fail. His perfidy to his own people in Ohio is too big to allow him to escape with the label of “opportunist,” and yet the shabbiness and absurdity of his Senate campaign is too small to brand him a defector or a heretic.

Great movie... Better book... Awesome VP choice...
Vance won one election and did not serve the term out before Daffy Donald selected him for VP. He does not know how politics works. You call him an awesome choice. You have no values and do not evaluate. If Trump says it or does it, you see perfection. Vance has been an embarrassment several times already. Your idea of awesome is chilling.

He also did not say he would vote for Harris.

I know...I voted for him...There's really nothing about him that I don't like...

Why do you think Trump picked him? Because he was a suck-up? Because he'd do anything for power and money including drop to his knees on stage and blow Donnie?
