In a tragic start to Preakness day, the winner of the first race at Pimlico Race Course has died on his walk back to the barn.

Homeboykris had rallied to win the race by a half-length on a rainy Saturday. After having his picture taken in the winner's circle, he collapsed and died. Track officials believe the 9-year-old gelding suffered cardiovascular collapse.

The horse will be taken to New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania for an autopsy.

Homeboykris won the Champagne Stakes in 2009 and a year later finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby with former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre as a co-owner. He had just won his 14th race in 63 career starts and fourth in six races.

More misfortune struck in the final turn of Race 4 when Pramedya, a 4-year-old filly running out of the No. 8 position, collapsed on the turf and suffered a left-front mid-cannon-bone fracture. She was euthanized on the track.

It was just her fifth career start.

Pramedya's jockey, Daniel Centeno, fractured his right clavicle and was taken to Sinai Hospital.

Pramedya’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson (Lael Stables), also owned Barbaro, who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby before breaking his leg two weeks later in the Preakness.

A 19-year-old cowboy died after being stepped on several times by a horse at Cowtown Rodeo Saturday night.

Coy Lutz, of Howard, Pennsylvania, was competing in the bareback bronc riding event on the opening night of the rodeo's 62nd season.

"He was a nice kid, a really nice kid, from a nice family," said Cowtown Rodeo owner/producer Grant Harris.

According to Harris, this is the first time a cowboy has died from injuries sustained while taking part in the rodeo here.

"It's tragic and traumatic to our entire industry," Harris said Sunday morning.

It's sad and I really feel for his family. The saving grace from this accident is that he died doing what he loved and i'm certain that he fully understood the dangers involved every time he entered the arena. There are injuries in pretty much every rodeo since ultimately you are dealing with large powerful animals but you obviously never expect for someone to die. I've been thrown, kicked, and stepped on by my horses and all it really takes is one bad landing or kick.
