Is Obama a socialist?

Obama is not a socialist; he does not, to my knowledge, support public ownership of major means of production. I'd classify Obama as a European-style Social Democrat. He is liberal, but not Marxist.

Hi Thor. I'm a socialist. I'm a member of a socialist party. Neither I nor my party support "... public ownership of major means of production".

I support public ownership where it is necessary to deliver key public services in a fair, effective and sustainable manner, e.g. health, water and power. But other than that I'm happy for an appropriately regulated, but essentially free market to operate across the rest of the economy.

Socialism does not equal marxism. Many marxists think it does, as do many politial science professors, but for mainstream socialists there is no contradiction between capital and labour that cannot be resolved within a democratic political system and a social market economy.
