AP IMPACT: States Could Release Inmates

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lawmakers from California to Kentucky are trying to save money with a drastic and potentially dangerous budget-cutting proposal: releasing tens of thousands of convicts from prison, including drug addicts, thieves and even violent criminals.

Officials acknowledge that the idea carries risks, but they say they have no choice because of huge budget gaps brought on by the slumping economy.

I guess the prison privitization in KY did not save that much money ;)

A shrinking economy and yet more people on the streets who are troubled.

This is going to be some tuff times.

Prison for profit?

What made them think they would not bail on the deal when they profit was hard to come by?
 
It will not suprise me if they do not remove most of the prisioners from the state prisons and keep the private ones full....Even though they have been shown to cost more per prisoner.
