Jobs Picture Weak Nationwide; Midwest Trails in Spending

Both measures are down year-to-year in all regions

by Dennis Jacobe, Chief Economist

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup daily tracking results from the month of July show job creation down 33% and consumer spending down 40% from a year ago. The year-to-year decline in job creation is generally consistent across regions. Spending is down the most in the Midwest and the least in the South.

Job Creation
In July, an average of 24% of U.S. workers nationwide reported that their employers were hiring new employees and expanding the size of their workforces. That figure is essentially unchanged from June (23%). The same is true in most regions of the country -- with the exception of the West, in which job creation increased to 22% from 19% the prior month. Even so, July job creation is worst in the West, while it is best in the South (26%).

This must be so exciting for you.

I was getting worried about you, since the market was doing so well. I'm glad you were able to find something...

This month's jobs numbers are a sign that we've begun to put the brakes on this recession and that the worst may be behind us.

But we must do more than rescue our economy from this immediate crisis; we must rebuild it stronger than before.

We must lay a new foundation for future growth and prosperity, and a key pillar of a new foundation is health insurance reform that we are now closer to achieving than ever before.

You have this innate ability to copy and paste from Obama's press conferences without quoting the article. Well done sir.
