Republican presidential nominee John McCain is blasting a story by the National Enquirer claiming his vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin had an extramarital affair. McCain's campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the tabloid magazine. According to the Enquirer, Palin allegedly had an affair with a 'former business associate' of her husband, Todd Palin. This latest scandalous rumor comes only days after Palin announced that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol Palin, is pregnant by 18-year-old boyfriend Levi Johnston.

The National Enquirer, citing unidentified sources, reported that Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin allegedly engaged in an extramarital affair with a friend of her husband, Todd Palin. According to the unnamed source whom the tabloid labeled ‘an enemy’, “Todd discovered the affair and quickly dissolved his friendship and his business associations with the guy… Many people in Alaska are talking about the rumor and say Todd swept it under the rug.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, John McCain’s campaign threatened to sue the National Enquirer over the story. “The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

According to the Enquirer, Palin also reportedly unjustly fired a public safety official while she was in office. However, the magazine did not site any named sources in their report.

“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.

“Legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

The rumors of Sarah Palin’s possible extramarital affair are only the latest in a seemingly endless progression of scandal following the announcement of the Alaskan governor’s addition as Republican John McCain’s vice-presidential running mate. Previously, a pervasive rumor flying across the internet claimed that Palin’s daughter, Bristol Palin, was actually the real birth mother of her youngest child, Trig Palin. Several web sites, including DailyKos.com, outlined a convoluted plotline of a faked pregnancy, illustrated by photos of mother and daughter, to support their claim that Sarah Palin was actually Trig’s grandmother, not his mother.

That rumor was met with the announcement that Bristol Palin was five months old with a child fathered by 18-year-old boyfriend Levi Johnston—therefore making it impossible she could have fathered four-month-old Trig Palin.

Even that announcement was fodder for the Enquirer, however, which says an insider claims Palin had wanted to announce her daughter’s pregnancy and impending marriage to her boyfriend before the vice-presidential announcement—but Levi Johnston, the baby’s father, was not yet on board with the plan.

Johnston has been cited as being an unwilling participant in the decision that he and Bristol Palin should marry before their child is born. In a posting on his MySpace page, which has since been set to private, Johnston claimed that he was not interested in having kids.

The Enquirer’s claims that Sarah Palin engaged in an extramarital affair might have previously been largely ignored, as many such similar stories have been in the past. However, the magazine’s accurate information regarding former Democratic presidential candidate John Edward’s affair with mistress Rielle Hunter has lately given the Enquirer a bit more credibility as a new source in the mainstream media.

McCain's campaign has no standing to sue the national enquirer. ONLY the slandered or libeled person has standing to sue.

This will work to her advantage. Republicans do not want to vote for anyone morally superior to them. Their selected leader must be at least as sleazy as they are.

She is as bad as Edwards, but for some reason the Cons wont care. Affairs are only bad when Democrats have em!

I am sick of these frivilous lawsuits filed by Republican campaigns... Run to the courts thats all they ever do.

"Ill Sue!" - That should be McCains new solgan!

Kind of interesting as a lawyer one might think you of all people would appreciate someone being innocent until having been shown to do something wrong. I guess your partisan instincts are stronger than your lawyerly ones?

You did not get my sarcasm. When the Enquiror broke the story about Edwards all the Cons jumped on it and were upset the national media did not report it right away! Funny when the tables are turned how quickly that changes.

Makes me very curious...Enquiring minds want to know!

Was it Richter, was it Hansen? Why did Richter not want his divorce decree made public?
He is shy, he wants privacy? If no one has anything to hide, why is he trying to hide?

Sara Palin can take care of herself pretty good. I think you saw her speach.
I want to see Sara Palin take on the whole media all by herself---and she can do it. She will do it, if she is the kind of person the liberial media should be very scared of--and I can see it in her--and I can see the socialist gay mofia media is terrified of her. She is the Baracuda. When a tough state like Alaska names her a name like that--that should be a indicator that she can kick your whimpy fat couch potato azzes in her sleep. lol

Nobody calls the media out--but you see it is already starting to happen with Palin. Get your popcorn--and watch this po-dunct gal kick their butts all over your TV.

you liberial America haters could always form a support group for yourselfs. May be share some bean sprouts and have a orgy to make you feel good. You think you are America?---that is obsurd. All that work that has been done by social commies--pushing socialistic. communistic principals in our universities, dominating our media, replacing our judges, telling America what it needs---is going to all be torn apart by this gal--and the American people. You freaks do not reperesent America--no matter how much of a legand you are in your own minds.

Your gonna have to kill Sara palin to stop her and us from protecting our country against socialism--then there might be a bit of backlash there--ya know?

that is what your socialist/communist party do (democrats and some republicans today). they don't debate who they don't like (Oprah)--they just eliminate them. That is also how Obama got his senate seat from what I hear (not murder--that I know of--but chicago thug style politics of elimaniting by destroying their name--good or bad.) People actually died that were in Clintons way--and I am kinda suprised Hillery did not off Obama. I bet she thought about it--may be still does. I do love the infighting power strugle of the Dem party this year. Note the media--trying to elimanate Sara Palin. It won't work. I feel the party you suooprt wants to off her right now, because they know how dangerous she is to their and your commie movvement. How about a debate? I hope Sara Palin grows old in office.

A creationist pro-lifer who supports abortion in the case of rape, and tells parents of special needs children that they will have an "ally in the White House" after gutting the budget for special needs children in Alaska, does not represent America either.

It's amazing how quickly the right has mythologized this politician, who really represents a sort of Kucinich of the right, except without as much integrity. She'll never win a national election unless she "pulls a McCain," and radically changes her principles.

It is not amazing how Palin excites consertatives. We are always catching liberial pitchs, and we are sick of it. On top of that-I think McCain recogonizes the commie movement you support--and gave us Palin to help us fight you fuckers. (I call you that, because you always affect my life in a negative way--fuckers) I think he knew she could have a awakening effect on the American people, and I appalud his choice loudly. That shows me that he actually does love this country--unlike you fuckers. The more Palins we can get in higher offices, the better--up to 50% would be fucking nice---fucker!! lol You want to change freedom to socialism and your trying to eliminate the only person in your way (and the American peolple)--and that makes you a world wide fucker.

Dig as deep into Palin as you want. She will explain every one of the accuations, and prove her innocence from thrashing like this. I hope the American people will then be able to see the media mafia for what they are--and the media takes a huge hit in the credibility department.

Hey fucker--if you hate freedom---move to any other country you want. Or else--you will be fighting most Americans. we have pitch forks and guns and amazing motavation--you have your dildo and a glass of kool-aid! Am I correct?

Is the McCain campaign really considering the National Enquirer a part of "the media"?
