FORT PIERCE, Fla. — U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon dived into the minutiae of the Justice Department budget at a morning hearing about former president Donald Trump’s indictment for mishandling classified documents.

The proceeding, which lasted more than an hour and a half, was about Trump’s efforts to dismiss the indictment against him based on the claim that special counsel Jack Smith’s office was improperly funded.

Cannon is due to hold a separate hearing Monday afternoon on the government’s request for a court order barring him from making unfounded accusations against the FBI — a hot-button topic just days before Trump is due to face off on live television against President Biden in the first presidential debate between the presumptive candidates of the major parties.
