THE FACTS: The Klan first emerged after the Civil War in an effort to intimidate Southern blacks to stay out of politics and to exploit their labor. It was created in Pulaski, Tennessee, by Confederate veterans: Frank McCord, Richard Reed, John Lester, John Kennedy, J. Calvin Jones and James Crowe. Mark Pitcavage, senior fellow at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, told The Associated Press that it was originally designed “purely for entertainment, with no political motivations.”
 
The KKK was largely formed by ex-confederate soldiers and leaders. It was not political, but about racism and bigotry. It became big in the south and made deep inroads into the Democratic Party. It was the southern party until the 1950s. They were not Democrats in philosophy. Their politics were more aligned with the Repubs. They were called Dixiecrats, because they were Dems in name but their philosophy and politics was pro Republican party. They voted far more with the reds. When LBJ passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. They moved en masse to the party they really belonged to, The Republican Party. They have been seamlessly a part of them since.

The Democratic Party was never a progressive party until Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt. It was a socially conservative, states-rights party in the 19th century. I would have chosen to be a Republican in 1870.

Democrats who were really aligned with Repubs and bigots. They were called Dixiecrats for a reason. They were Repub in almost every way. The South was Dem in name because the Repubs were seen as carpetbaggers. You could not get elected in the South if you were not a Dem. When LBJ did the Civil Rights Act, that ended and the Reds moved to their real home, The Republican Party.

dixiecrats is an 1980s term.

most clansmen were democrats. period. full stop. still no capitalization.

lincoln was the republican who ended slavery.
