Hiram Monserrate was arrested on December 19, 2008 and accused of slashing Karla Giraldo in the face with a broken drinking glass.

On March 23, 2009, a grand jury indicted Monserrate on three felony and three misdemeanor charges, in connection with a December 19, 2008 injury to his girlfriend.

His companion initially made statements to hospital staff and the police which led to his arrest. She later changed her account to match that of Monserrate. namely that the cuts on her face near her left eye from a broken glass were an "accident".

On February 27, 2009, the order of protection which prevents Monserrate from having contact with Giraldo was extended over the objections of Monserrate's attorney.

He was convicted on October 15, 2009 of one count of misdemeanor assault, and acquitted of two counts of felony assault and one other count of misdemeanor assault.

He was later sentenced to three years probation, 250 hours of community service, and one year of domestic abuse counseling.

In April 2011, Monserrate was working at Papaya Pizza in Corona, Queens. It is unclear if he is an owner or only an employee.

While a hidden camera famously captured Virginia Representative Jim Moran's son Patrick Moran's questionable judgment regarding voter fraud, his latest scandal may not be as clear-cut.

On Wednesday, the younger Moran pleaded guilty to beating his girlfriend in front of a Columbia Heights bar.

A report filed states that two Metropolitan Police officers witnessed Moran "grab (his girlfriend) by the head with his hand and slam her head into the metal trash can receptacle causing severe injuries."

His 24-year-old girlfriend issued a statement that read in part, "This was an accident that has been blown out of proportion. The statements in the police report are inaccurate. Pat and I were arguing, one of my high heels gave out, and I fell into the side of a trashcan. On impact, I fractured my nose. False conclusions were made as a result."

Ross Mirkarimi was charged with domestic violence battery, child endangerment, and dissuading a witness in connection with a New Year's Eve altercation he had with his wife.

The domestic abuse complaint was lodged by Ivory Madison, a neighbor. According to a search warrant that police issued to obtain text messages that she exchanged with Mirkarimi's wife and a video that she took of his wife's bruised arm, Madison called police after Mirkarimi's wife told Madison that she had been bruised in a New Year's Eve altercation with Mirkarimi.

Madison videotaped the bruise at the request of Mirkarimi's wife and the two discussed the incident via text messages. On the video, Mirkarimi's wife said, "This is the second time... We need help ...he said that he is very powerful and can do it."

While jury selection was underway, Mirkarimi entered into a plea agreement with the district attorney, pleading guilty to one count of misdemeanor false imprisonment.

Mayor Lee suspended Mirkarimi pending an ethics investigation and appointed Vicki Hennessy as Acting Sheriff.

During the Ethics Commission hearings, significant portions of Ivory Madison's sworn statement were ruled inadmissible.

Mirkarimi's wife repudiated the charges against her husband.

Mirkarimi was reunited with his wife after a judge lifted the stay-away order that barred Mirkarimi from contacting her.

The National Lawyers Guild of San Francisco issued a statement urging the Board of Supervisors to support Mirkarimi and calling for an end to the use of City resources to pursue the case.

Several groups also created statements of support for Mirkarimi to remain in office since the domestic violence allegations surfaced, including the San Francisco Labor Council, the Bernal Heights Democratic Club, the Central City Democrats, and the San Francisco Green Party.

Of the six charges brought by District Attorney George Gascón, five were overruled and not sustained, including the charge that Mirkarimi dissuaded witnesses and that he abused the power of his office.

Four of eleven San Francisco Supervisors voted to reinstate Mirkarimi as Sheriff. According to the city charter, removing a public official for misconduct requires the vote of nine of eleven supervisors; only seven supervisors voted to remove Mirkarimi.
