lobbyists from the food industry lobbied hard for less reporting and tracking requirements

now people have died because of that lack of tracking

bushco strikes again

Let's not get all emo about this. People died because of improper food handling. The lack of tracking info just made it difficult to find the source. Even perfect tracking would not have prevented the outbreak from occurring. If we want safer food, let's spend the extra money safer food will cost on better processing, then we won't need to worry about tracking.

people died because people in the produce chain blew it

better tracking would have helped people get care faster and potentially saved lives if not hospital stays (caution, hospitals can be hazardous to your health, but that is another post)

safer growing and handling would cut down on food related sickness - check the bacteria counts in your kitchen - your toilet is usually cleaner...
