Marriage came about around the same time as the concept of 'private property' (whenever that was) supposedly pre-biblical times.

It would be quite a coincidence for marriage to come from the Christian bible and still be found almost universally in every culture of the world.

Marriage as an agreement has existed in one form or another since Ancient Egypt. Hebrews had marriage as a contract and an obligation hence the Ancient requirement that a brother take his sister in law as his wife if his brother died. As a sacrament that comes from Paul, in one of his letters to someone, (Ephesisans I think without going to look it up right now).

The original marriage rites in many cultures had more to do with property rights than with joining two people.

The fundies want people to think its biblical in origin, because that cuts down on the arguments against it. "Its in the bible!" is supposed to be the final word in an argument.
