They were coming forward to shake hands but Tom Brokaw couldn't ad lib an ending to a debate and had them back off. By the time he was done reading it they were in the audience shaking hands.

Actually, they did shake hands immediately after the debate. McCain snubbed Obama later though.

I saw Obama extend his hand, after all the audience shaking happened, and McCain gestured to his wife who grabbed Obama's hand and shook it. McCain intentionally waived him off.
