NEW YORK — New York Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban announced his resignation Thursday, about a week after his electronics were seized in an ongoing federal investigation into potential corruption.

The probe reportedly centers on the activities of Caban’s twin brother, James, a former police officer who is heavily involved in the city’s nightlife industry, as questions lingered over whether the sibling may have used his ties to the head of the country’s largest police force to fix potential problems for clubs and bars.

City Hall has been buffeted by four federal investigations, which have resulted in searches and phone seizures targeting high-ranking city officials, including Commissioner Caban. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York is overseeing the investigation involving Mr. Caban, as well as two of the other inquiries focusing on officials in the Adams administration.

The investigation into Mr. Adams and his campaign fund-raising spilled into public view when federal agents searched the home of his chief fund-raiser, Brianna Suggs, last November. According to a search warrant, that inquiry is examining whether the campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations.
