I have never understand why Peter Jackson excised all references to Tom Bombadil from the LOTR films. Considering that he was such a pivotal character in the books it really doesn't make a lot of sense.

Interestingly, Harry Potter released at the same time as The Fellowship, and Dumbledore mentioned how a hypothetical man could stand before the Mirror of Erised, and see reality, much like Tom Bambadil wearing the ring of power.
