LA Times/538.com: NBC's Matthews Seriously Eyeing Specter's Senate Seat

Will Democrats play Hardball with Arlen?

538.com and The LA Times are reporting that MSNBC/CNBC talk show host Chris Matthews is recruiting staff for a possible run at Arlen Specter's Pennsylvania Senate seat.

Matthews, who hosts MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" and CNBC's "The Chris Matthews Show," was a staffer for former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill. His contract with the NBC networks is up next year, which could pave the way for new career goals.

A socially conservative Democrat, Matthews has voiced a long-time passion for politics, both in theory and practice. He would face an uphill battle in his home state, though. Specter is still fairly popular in Pennsylvania, despite the problems Republicans face nationwide. A Quinnipiac poll shows Specter with a 59-percent approval rating and five-percent advantage in a theoretical head-to-head matchup.

Matthews would have the highest national name recognition among potential Democratic challengers, a list that also includes Pennsylvania Representative Joe Sestak. But national name recognition hasn't helped Pennsylvanians decide on Matthews. Many respondents say they don't know enough about him. It's a problem another talk show host, Al Franken, faced in a run for his home state's nomination.

If the matchup were to happen, it would likely be one of the wild card races of 2010. Despite his current popularity, Specter is still considered vulnerable within an increasingly blue Pennsylvania. Recent bouts with cancer have taken a physical toll on him, and he doesn't have the influence he once had as a member of the majority.
