A man who told police he shot someone trying to rob him now faces second-degree murder charges, and police believe he also could be responsible for a violent pizza shop robbery earlier this month.

Ryan P. Brown, 35, of the 2300 block of Atlantic Ave., faces charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, robbery, use of a firearm and grand larceny, according to police. He is in custody without bond.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. around 4 a.m. on Dec. 8 to find Edward D. Chapple suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Brown told police Chapple had tried to rob him and that he shot him, according to a news release.

During their investigation police learned Brown's explanation of the events leading up to the shooting "did not match their findings," according to the release. The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney reviewed the case and authorized murder charges, police said.

Investigators working the case also identified Brown as a suspect in a Dec. 4 robbery at Chanello's Pizza on Aragona Boulevard. Two employees were shot during the robbery, and the suspect fled with cash, police said. Neither of the employees suffered life-threatening injuries. Brown now also faces charges in connection with that
