The Obama Effect

US car dealer in free gun offer

A car dealership in the United States is offering a free handgun with every vehicle sold.

Max Motors in Butler, Missouri, says sales have quadrupled since the start of the offer.

Customers can choose between a gun or a $250 gas card, but most so far have chosen the gun.

Owner Mark Muller said: "We're just damn glad to live in a free country where you can have a gun if you want to."

The dealership sells new and old vehicles, including General Motors and Ford cars and trucks, and its logo shows a cowboy holding a pistol.

It has sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the past three days, an increase which the owners put down to their promotional offer.

Inspiration from Obama

Mr Muller said that every buyer so far "except one guy from Canada and one old guy" chose the gun, rather than the gas card.

He recommends a Kel-Tec .380 pistol, which he describes as "a nice little handgun that fits in your pocket".

He added that the promotion was inspired by recent comments from one of the Democratic nominees for the presidential election, saying: "We did it because of Barack Obama.

"He said all those people in the Midwest, you've got to have compassion for them because they're clinging to their guns and their Bibles. I found that quite offensive. We all go to church on Sunday and we all carry guns."

The website advertisement for the offer, which continues until the end of the month, mentions that an approved background check on gun ownership is required.

Gotta love those bitter people that cling to their guns & religion...

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them,"
"And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,"

So do you really think people in America are not bitter from having their concerns ignored by the people who run this country?

The thing is with this type of redicules non issue bullshit is it only gets traction with people who would never voter for him anyway.

Is Obama going to fix these problems? What is he going to do? Is he going to increase dependency or independence of Americans? How is he going to do this?

Obama did well explaining what he meant by that statement. Indeed, people who look at both parties and see no real hope for betterment will probably be feeling bitter.

But, sorry to say, he is dead wrong with the rest of it. People who care about gun control issues do so because they feel constitutional protections are important. Some may even thing that freedoms are (GASP!) more important than money.

People that support continued freedom of religion do so because they (justly or paranoid) feel their rights to worship openly and freely are being threatened.

As for immigration and trade, those ARE economic issues, thus indicating a concern for the economy, and a focus on what they believe to be a cause of the economy going south on them. Others may believe focusing on those issues is bad analysis, but it does not make them "too bitter" to be concerned about economic issues.

When a candidate misreads the motivations of voters as badly as Obama does with his statement, it is not exactly a "non issue". It indicates that Obama believes there is no valid reason (other than bitterness about job losses) for people voting on those issues. Certainly economy and jobs is an important issue. But it is not the only issue, and different people will place different priorities on issues no matter how they feel about the economy. Obama's statement shows he does not understand that basic fact.

(Either that or he WAS, indeed, ridiculing those who think gun control or prayer in schools are important issues. But I'll give Obama the benefit of the doubt and assume he's just too inexperienced to recognize that people don't always agree which issues are most important.)
