I don't think it's entirely impossible yet for the Democrats to reach sixty.
I think there's good betting money on the possiblity that they will get at least one of the three seats still up for grabs. That leaves 2.
Olympia Snowe should be offered a high level position in Obama's cabinet (a Democrat would then be appointed to replace her), and Arlen Specter should be lobbied heavily to join the Democratic party (he agrees with the Democrats 99% of the time anyway and would be easy to lure with promises of committee chairmanship).
Then we could pass the primary legislation that the Democrats were elected for, such as card-check and Obama's health care plan, which will eventually lead to universal healthcare. The radical Democratic positions wouldn't be possible, so it's nothing for moderates to worry about. In fact, it's the only way to get done anything the moderates want. It is also probably the only way that we can hope to abolish those stupid mandatory minimums.
