The three trillion dollar war
The cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts have grown to staggering proportions
Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes

The Bush Administration was wrong about the benefits of the war and it was wrong about the costs of the war. The president and his advisers expected a quick, inexpensive conflict. Instead, we have a war that is costing more than anyone could have imagined.

The cost of direct US military operations - not even including long-term costs such as taking care of wounded veterans - already exceeds the cost of the 12-year war in Vietnam and is more than double the cost of the Korean War.

The great thing about wars is that you never need to justify the expense and you can always find the money to fight them.

:clink:

Good thing I elected that fiscal conservative, or else the socialists would've had me enslaved by now!

You know, Libertarians, there's another, more likely, road to serfdom, and it's spelled out clearly in 1984. War.

Anyone who ever cast a vote for Bush, supported the Iraq war, or made excuses for the occupation and the surge, can bascially sit down and shut their pie hole about federal spending.

Quick bit of trivia: can anyone name the White House official who was fired for suggesting the war could cost as much as $200 billion in 2003?

Onceler, no one could have predicted the war would cost this much; that people would fly planes into buildings; or that the tax cuts wouldn't pay for themselves. :(

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars. -- Barack Obama, 2002

there you go fearmongering again ;)

Just keep quiet while we stay the course to ruin in more ways than one.

but I had to vote against Kerry.. just had to. and I was against the war until McCain ran for president.
....
Pathetic....

there's also a BushCo. appointee who predicted the Iraq reconstruction would only cost $1.7 billion, and no more.

Who could've predicted?

This is the kind of thing that pisses me off so much. In the beginning, this was a $50 billion, 6-month war to rid Saddam of WMD's. 5 years & a trillion later, some modest success with the "surge" have idiots like O'Reilly screaming "victory! Vindication for Bush!"

Vindication for what? I have no doubt that if we increased our troop presense for 50 years and fought our brains out, we could somehow turn Iraq into a decent democracy after that time. Would they be screaming "vindication" then? What's the limit on that?

How stupid do they think we are on this? Man, does it piss me off...

But look at the results guys. Iraq is a peaceful.....ah ..... The taliban is not longer running.... ah.... we found all those WMD's and now...hmmm... WE GOT RID OF SADDAM! Three trillion dollars to overthrow Saddam. Deal of the century

Wow I did fail to mention that! See more bang for your buck. We should all write letters of thanks to GWB.
