Thousands of burned-out leftover hippies in mourning today

At least, the few that are still capable of feeling anything are mourning. The rest are just staring at the wall, not doing much of anything. One was heard to say, "Wow, man, like all good trips must end, you know, can you dig it? Coooool......"

Albert Hofmann, father of drug LSD, dies in Switzerland

GENEVA -- Albert Hofmann, the father of the mind-altering drug LSD whose medical discovery inspired _ and arguably corrupted _ millions in the 1960s hippie generation, has died. He was 102.

Hofmann died Tuesday at his home in Burg im Leimental, said Doris Stuker, a municipal clerk in the village near Basel where Hofmann moved following his retirement in 1971.

For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention.

"I produced the substance as a medicine. ... It's not my fault if people abused it," he once said.

The Swiss chemist discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938 while studying the medicinal uses of a fungus found on wheat and other grains at the Sandoz pharmaceuticals firm in Basel.

He became the first human guinea pig of the drug when a tiny amount of the substance seeped onto his finger during a laboratory experiment on April 16, 1943.

"I had to leave work for home because I was suddenly hit by a sudden feeling of unease and mild dizziness," he subsequently wrote in a memo to company bosses.

"Everything I saw was distorted as in a warped mirror," he said, describing his bicycle ride home. "I had the impression I was rooted to the spot. But my assistant told me we were actually going very fast."

Upon reaching home, Hofmann began experiencing what he called "wonderful visions."

Three days later, Hofmann experimented with a larger dose. The result was the world's first scientifically documented bad trip.

"The substance which I wanted to experiment with took over me. I was filled with an overwhelming fear that I would go crazy. I was transported to a different world, a different time," Hofmann wrote.

Hofmann and his scientific colleagues hoped that LSD would make an important contribution to psychiatric research. The drug exaggerated inner problems and conflicts and thus it was hoped that it might be used to recognize and treat mental illnesses like schizophrenia.

Sgt. Pepper & the White Album were both written on LSD; I think Abbey Road was, too. That's gotta count for something.

And here I always thought they were written on paper. Damn, you learn something new every day.

Musta been hell during windstorms.

Ok, so I have now waited long enough to discover that it is OK to mock the death of somebody, or take it with a grain of salt, UNLESS they are a Republican. Since I, and several others have been severely scolded for not taking seriously the deaths of such luminaries as ann coulter’s father.

I mean, I always knew this, because “When republicans do it, then that’s OK” is the number ONE rule of message board posting. But I just wanted to wait long enough for all you repukes to prove it. Thanks, I’ll bookmark this for the next time an 89 year old repuke kicks off.

Is it to be assumed this guy is a liberal?

Jeez - I missed this in Little A's 1st post. If there is one thing unhip conservative hacks cannot do, it's speak hippie.

Does anyone remember that true-life murder story on TV a few years back, about that straight-laced doctor who murdered his family & tried to blame the crime on "drug crazed hippies?" He told police that, as the hippies were butchering his wife, one said "this is a really groovy trip, man."

He ended up getting convicted. Little A reminds me of that, though.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Tonight I'm gonna call up my GDF friends and we will trip some of Albert's finest in his honor.

The guy was AUSTRIAN so he was probably not a hippy, he discovered LSD in the 30's so he wasn't part of the counter culture, AND the CIA used his invention as an interogation tool. So not just hippies used LSD though more of the TOOK LSD. I was not a hippy, but I have ingested a fair amount of LSD, most of it in the 80's and 90's. I even tripped on a long weekend in Garmisch Germany while I was in the Army. I definitely was not a hippy then.

Oh yeah, I do vaguely remember that, I think it was based on a true story.
