The Bush Admin and Senator McCain warned repeatedly about Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac and what thus became the 2008 financial crisis -- starting in 2002 (and actually even earlier -- in the Clinton and Carter White Houses. Democrats resisted and kept to their party line, extending loans to people who couldn't afford them

Fannie and Freddie started the whole toxic asset debacle with government secured loans. Franks, Waters, and Dodd were the people in charge of oversight and they turned a blind eye and stuck their fingers in their ears when it was pointed out.

We could have had a 3 year head start on this!!!!!!!
 
They did try and warn of problems, and the reply was "Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac are just fine!".

But the push after 9/11 to spend and spend, in order to bring back the economy did a good deal of harm too.

Thats a very sweet sentiment. But the point of it is that people borrowed money that they were unable to repay.

They got into mortgages that were more than they could afford or that the interest rates were going to sky-rocket.

Are you people unaware of all the fraud that is being investigated by the FBI which was done by the lenders?

I'm sooo glad the American people are awake now and will not buy these idiot ideas for what caused this mess.

every sane person knows this happened because the lending industry was allowed to consolidate and hide the massive amounts of loans being written and package them off with other products making them sellable. If they were not sellable this would have never happened.

Desh, it was during Clinton's watch that pressure began to be applied to banks to make loans to people who would not have normally qualified for a mortgage. The banks were forced to "give back" a certain percentage of their loans to people who would not have been able to get one, and would eventually go into foreclosue.

The fact is that neither side did anything to stop the problem.

The long we waste time trying to blame one side, the worse the situation becomes.

Both sides may have contributed to the problem, but republicans did attempt through several hearings to "deal" with the looming crisis as far back as 2001.

And the problem actually began back with Carter

You do realize that if this is true it makes Bush and McCain criminally negligent in their duties.
