U.S. Army deserter to be deported

A U.S. Army specialist who fled Ft. Bragg for Canada in 2004 after learning that his unit was to be deployed to Iraq was ordered deported.

Jeremy Hinzman, 29, who said he refused to participate in what he calls an immoral and illegal war, is likely to be court-martialed and could face up to five years in prison.

Hinzman said the Canada Border Services Agency told him to leave by Sept. 23 and said he would be handed over to U.S. authorities.

Canada is showing no love for cowards these days.

This is an atrocity. The cowards in our government who send our boys to die deserve to be hanged. No one should be required to work in an immoral war they don't agree with, under any circumstances.

See the thing is, if you don't want to be available to be sent to fight in a war regardless of whether you agree with it, you shouldn't VOLUNTEER for the military.

This deserter volunteered for service.

Did he think that he would get to decide whether or not to fight?

From what I have seen, he joined the military in the beginning of 2001. But he didn't desert until 2004 when his unit was ordered to go to Iraq.

Why should deserters be put in prison? Whenever I violate a contract, I may have to pay back what I owe. But the government thinks its special when it comes to contracts, and that it can put people in prison because of it.

When you join the military you are then subject to the UCMJ, by your own decision. An officer can, in some instances, just shoot a traitor.

Violate comntracts often?

Well, most contracts stipulate what can happen to you if you fail to uphold your end. The military contract does.

Just because an atrocity is allowed doesn't make it right.

If rape were legal would you think it was good to rape people Damo?

Contracts cannot contain absurd penalties, like prison, or slavery, for violating them. If they did they'd be laughed out of the courtroom and the judge would just order the person to pay back what he got from the contract.

WM, you can make all the claims you want.

The fact is that there are laws governing our military. This man joined our military. He didn't have a problem with being a part of an organization who's entire point is to make war. Until he had to go to war.

So he has to pay the consequences.

I doubt any of the soldiers WANT to be in Iraq or Afganistan. But they VOLUNTEERED to be in the military. And they are honoring their commitment.

If you don't like the laws, then change them. Until you do, those who willingly break them must be willing to face the consequences.

He's a conscientious objector. It's wrong to punish these people. I do not like the laws, I will change them, and I will never accept them as legitimate.

There is a difference between "good" and "legal".

Those circumstances where a traitor can be shot are under circumstances where their betrayal can kill other soldiers. Would it be "good" to kill one soldier to save the lives of the rest?

As for deciding to subject yourself to the UCMJ, that is neither "good" nor "bad" it is simply a decision every person in the military makes.

Your simplistic attempt at Reductio ad Absurdam has been exposed as ignorance.

YOu cannot become a conscienttious objector at the point you have to serve in a war zone. This guy chose to be the army, he chose to serve for almost 4 years before he decided that his service in the Military did not include preforming military duties, like going into a war zone. If he truly is a c.o. then he should be a medic which is not allowed to engage in offensive combat. Right at the top of the job description list for soldier is the possibility of dying in combat in your country.

Whenever I don't pay my bills, should I be put in prison? There's no difference whenever it comes to desertion. He should be required to repay his signing bonus. That's it.
