Watch this and then tell me if you think it is justified.

I don't think that story told enough to determine whether or not she should have been arrested, but what the hell were they strip searching her for? and why were there men involved in the search? Totally not justified.

We got police killing people (Bobby Cutts) and now this...and you wonder why I don't trust the government and believe in my 2nd amendment rights...

Canton detective charged with drunken driving
UPDATE: 7:47 PM, Thursday, February 7, 2008

CANTON - A Canton Police Department detective has been arrested on a drunken driving charge.

As a result, Chief Dean McKimm sparked an investigation with the Internal Affairs Office on the matter.

Detective James D. Daniel was arrested at 4:11 a.m. Sunday on Southway Street SW between Raff Road and Whipple Avenue by troopers with the Ohio Highway Patrol's Canton post.

Lt. Eric Sheppard confirmed that Daniel was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and a marked lanes violation for weaving. Daniel was alone in the passenger car, which was parked in nearby lot when he was taken to the patrol post.

Daniel was released on his own recognizance and a family member picked him up at the post, Sheppard said.

He said the officer refused to submit to a blood-alcohol content test, which resulted in an automatic administrative suspension of his driver's license, as required by Ohio law. The lieutenant said he didn't know where Daniel was coming from or headed to, but that the detective was "very cooperative and understanding."

McKimm said he opened an internal affairs investigation into the matter.

Daniel, hired onto the force Sept. 16, 1996, remained on the job today, the chief said. McKimm said he is still able to work.

"He not driving a car, obviously. He's doing office duties," the chief said.

This out today as well from the same police department...

Swanson asks state to review videotape of 2006 arrest

CANTON Stark County Sheriff Tim Swanson has asked the Ohio attorney general to investigate the 2006 arrest, jailing and subsequent strip search of a 47-year-old Salem woman.

The arrest of Hope Steffey on Oct. 20-21, 2006, was featured in Channel 3 news reports last week. Steffey has filed a federal lawsuit against Swanson's office, saying she was assaulted by deputies, denied medical help, strip-searched and left naked for six hours in a jail cell.

The lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court before Judge David D. Dowd Jr.

On Wednesday, Swanson issued a statement saying he "has reviewed this incident and feel comfortable that my deputies performed their rather unpleasant tasks in this incident in a professional manner that is consistent with the requirements of the law.

"However, an outside, objective review of our actions is always welcome and necessary to maintain the public's trust in this office. ... After conferring with counsel and Stark County Prosecutor John Ferrero's office, an official request has been made of Attorney General Marc Dann ... (to) review all circumstances surrounding the arrest and incarceration of Hope Steffey."

Swanson said "we respectfully request that the media and the public allow this incident to be reviewed by the Attorney General's Office and to withhold judgment in this regard until both sides of the incident have been told."

The sheriff said that once all the facts come out, "all will be satisfied with the trust and confidence they've expressed for the Stark County Sheriff's Office."

He noted that the Bureau of Adult Detention annually inspects all jail facilities to be sure the minimum standards are being met, and that Stark County "has had 100 percent compliance with those standards for the past three years."

Swanson said his office won't comment further on the incident until Dann's investigation is complete.

According to Steffey's lawsuit, she called 911 after being assaulted by a cousin on Oct. 20, 2006, on Weimer Drive SE. A deputy arrived and Steffey mistakenly gave him the driver's license of her deceased sister instead of her own. When she noticed the mistake, the deputy refused to give back the license, the lawsuit says.

Instead of getting medical help for Steffey, the lawsuit says, the deputy slammed her into his cruiser, cracking one of her teeth, and later threw her to the ground, causing cuts and bruises.

After being take to jail, the suit says, Steffey was asked, "Have you thought about harming yourself?"

She responded, "Now or ever?" She was immediately stripped of her clothing by male and female guards and left naked in a cell for six hours.

Steffey was later convicted in Alliance Municipal Court of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. She was given a suspended jail term.

Steffey's attorneys, David B. Malik of Chesterland and Dennis J. Niermann of Cleveland, could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
