WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two U.S. Air Force F-15s escorted two Russian Bear long-range bombers out of an air exclusion zone off the coast of Alaska, U.S. military officials said Wednesday.

U.S. radar picked up the Russian turbo-prop Tupolev-95 planes about 500 miles off the Alaska coast.

The U.S. fighters from Elmendorf Air Force Base were dispatched to meet the bombers and escorted them out of the area without incident, the officials said.

I think it is likely just for the reason stated in the article. Russia reminding the US that they are back in play as a power.

It is likely half reminder and half sabre rattling.

Those pesky Ruskies have been doing the same thing over here as well. Luckily they were no match for our Spitfires.

With the general pessimistic situation in today's world it is nice to know that there's always room, in a quality newspaper, to indulge in an article unfavourably comparing a 60 year-old grandmother, with no interest in fashion, to a 40 year-old former supermodel.

Although, to be fair, it was a rubbish hat.

But it was a hat. You know you want one for your poodle....

Well, it is tempting but, on a Thursday, i always prefer a sausage dog in a fedora.

What were TU-95 Doing there Anyway?

Same thing they've been doing there for the last 40 years, with a short break: Watching and listening in on our fleets and bases for any changes to radio communications, maneuvers, equipment etc.

You know, same thing our P-3s are doing off the coasts of China and Russia.

The Russians do not use long-range bombers to listen in on us. Nor do we use long-range bombers to listen in on them. P-3s are not long range bombers, and of course I know about them. I was a Russian Translator in the Navy...
