By delaying any investigation or prosecution of Trump until almost two years after he became attorney general, Garland hamstrung Jack Smith, the dogged and beleaguered special counsel, leaving little time for the predictable unpredictabilities of two high-stakes prosecutions.

Both were as solid as federal cases get, and now neither has any chance of being completed before the election, leaving voters without clear legal conclusions about Trump’s responsibility for the Jan. 6 riot and the highly classified documents he took from the White House.

Spit the hook out of your mouth and look around. He's a coward, yes. But incompetent? Not by a longshot. He knows everything that has been thrown at Trump is bullshit, but he has choreographed it perfectly. If the trigger had been pulled on these cases any earlier, at least some of them would have been tossed on appeal and in the rear-view mirror. As it is, you can call him a convicted felon all you want (until that's thrown out) and you can wet dream about all the jack smith and fanny willis crap that's falling apart but won't be settled before the election.
