I don't know if anyone who posts here keeps up with what's going on in the real world. You know, the rest of the internet. Anyway, there has been a big movement to discourage anonymous posting. Many sites have suffered for years with terrible comment sections fouled up with horrific racism, misogyny, threats, and various cruelties. Salon.com comes to mind for me. But it's all over the net. So now I have noticed that when I go to read an article at many sites, instead of not being able to make a comment because I never registered and won't bother to now, I am automatically signed in via facebook. At first I didn't like this. And I would never have thought I'd want to post non-anonymously.
But I like it. I like it a lot. I definitely see myself moving over to a 100% non-anonymous board(s). I don't think any message boards have done it yet. It's just news sites and blogs. Of course you can still create a fake fb account, or a fake twitter. This doesn't end abuse, but it greatly discourages it. There is a huge difference in the comment sections where everyone is posting with their fb accounts. So far no one has even called me a c*nt! Never once have I been called a man-hater. I post the same way I do here. First of all I think just having that picture of yourself right out there humanizes everyone to each other. And of course some of the behavior we have seen over the years, does anyone believe ID or Loyal would be spewing the things they spewed if their co-workers and neighbors could conceivably read it some day? (Their families probably know all too well) NO WAY.
I understand the argument for anonymity. You don't want your boss to see what your political opinions, blah blah blah. But I think that's very exaggerated and most people could post with their names. They just don't want to.
Especially with the election coming up I will definitely be moving more and more to sites that post with your FB. (You do not have to show your activity to your fb friends, so they are not buried under an onslaught of your Paul Ryan rantings). I would love to see a message board like JPP move to this format. Though I know JPP never will. But I think there's an opportunity there. People really are social animals and if you give them the opportunity to post as themselves, a lot of them will take it. It's more fun.
But I wonder what others here think, and if anyone here would ever do it.
