Romney: "Middle Income" Means $200,000 - $250,000

Let me tell you, George, the fundamentals of my tax policy are these. Number one, reduce tax burdens on middle-income people. So no one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle-income people, because principle number one is keep the burden down on middle-income taxpayers,” he said.

Romney defined middle income as $200,000 to $250,000 a year.

The median household income in the United States is slightly over $50,000.

$250,000 isn't middle income. $200,000 isn't middle income. $150,000 isn't middle income. $100,000 isn't middle income. There's a whole lot of "and less" that doesn't come close to what a sane (or reasonably well informed) person would characterize as "middle income."

Ask anyone who makes $200,000 a year if they think they are "rich". They do not. They think they are middle income. Oh, I know you want to play semantics with medians and averages etc. But, it really is a state of mind.

You think about that when you cast your ballot for OWEdummy.

BTW, is a Chicago teacher who is married to a Chicago firefighter making $200,000 a year combined RICH?
 
Basically Romney was defining what he meant by who would get what tax breaks. It is the same measure that Obama uses to tax the "very rich"... People who make more than $200,000 to $250,000 would be at the same tax level they currently are while others get breaks, those people will lose many of their deductions, etc, while people who make less will not...

I think he is smart to build in places where compromise can be reached. If you present a full budget the other side digs in, if you set parameters and let them work it out you can often get laws passed that would otherwise languish, unless you got super majorities in both houses...

What people think and what is factually correct are not the same thing. They may not think they are rich, but they sure as shit aren't middle income.It isn't a question of semantics, either. It's reality.

They aren't middle income. They earn over 4 times the median household income in Chicago. I wouldn't call it "RICH" necessarily, but it's a far far cry from middle income.

Are you're saying upper middle class isn't middle class because that's what you wouldn't call it? I'm not meeting your point. You don't like the limit he set for the tax changes, I get that. But it is the same limit that Mr. Taxtherich sets..

Basically, everything that follows "Basically" in the above post is pretty much horseshit and it another example of Damo bending over backwards to give a Republican the benefit of every doubt that he would never afford to any Democrat anywhere ever.

Romney's statement is abundantly clear. He thinks people earning $250,000 a year are the upper limit of "middle income." And that's just crazy.

In other words, Romney has not articulated an actual tax plan and you're totally cool with that because if he actually presented one people might not like it.

Middle class and middle income are different concepts, Damo.


Edit: And Romney isn't setting any point for the tax changes, because when you try to do everything that he says he wants to do, you can't do it without increasing taxes on people that earn less than $200,000. It's just not possible. Even one of the studies that he cites to in support of his plan says that.
