How many Americans die from smoking without even lighting up a cigarette? More than 42,000 people a year, including 900 infants, according to a new, thorough analysis of secondhand smoke deaths by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco.
Altogether, that's 600,000 years of potential life lost — an average of 14.2 years for each nonsmoker who has died prematurely as a result of someone else's smoking — amounting to $6.6 billion in lost productivity.

I was talking off the cuff a bit, but how am I supposed to find a link to something critical of a just published study? Do you have a link to the actual study? News reports often mangle the research or make them seem more conclusive than they are.

Yeah, let's get some more crappy commercials for Fox News and tax the, generally, poor to pay for them.

yes, let us tax the users for the harm that they do and the costs that they inflict on taxpayers

I know you are a misinformed liberal, but y have a computer. Google it

Please, cigarettes are already highly taxed and you have not proven your assertion or even really provided a good source. Numbers like that have been floated before and shot down. I won't bother because you are on a crusade and will reject it anyway.

How about a study of how many people die prematurely from being over taxed? You do realize that by taxing them you are creating a opportunity cost for the smokers and the children you pretend to want to protect. You are doing no one, but Rupert Murdoch, any favors.

Lies, damn lies and .........

I think it is about whatever our casualties in foreign wars are, all the people who die while fighting to arrest consensual acts, those who serve time for those acts and add in the damage done just for opportunity costs.

tick tick tick ding
waaaAYYYYY bigger than your grossly inflated number.

so make the users pay for the harm that they do when they purchase tobacco
Again they don't care. Same with most alcoholics, they'll pay what they have to get what they want. I've got a cousin, must waste thousands of dollars every year on liquor, it's trashed his kidneys, abused his family and its wasting his money, and he keeps drinking like there's no tomorrow. Addicts don't care.

you do not believe studies or statements by the press on the subject

you believe that smokers will continue to abuse their children by not providing for them because they have to pay too much for tobacco

and why do you believe that only fox news/murdock will only benefit by anti-smoking commercials

ps yes i am on a crusade, my step father smoked and he stank - when i washed my parents sheets they were stained by the stuff oozing out of his pores

also, have you thought about how much smoking costs the taxpayers in related health care costs and fire insurance costs

so let them pay the costs involved

and you forget the impact on young presmokers and the law enforcement costs to keep shop owners/clerks from selling to minors and health care costs

also, the more tobacco costs the fewer young smokers can afford it

Like, people need to stop mooching off of smokers and buy their own damned smokes. Then we wouldn't have a problem with second-hand exposure to begin with.

it is not the moochers that are the problem, it is the immediate family members, like infants and children that suffer the most

I have smoked for years. I have never smoked inside my home. You can't legislate against natural selection, no matter how much sense it makes to you.
