Politics: NO PROTESTS - State Dept. officials finally reveal the truth about Benghazi attacks

Published by: Robert Laurie on Wednesday October 10th, 2012

After nearly a month of lies, denials, and diversions, we finally know what really happened

Yesterday, on condition of anonymity, Senior State Department officials told reporters that, on the night of the attacks, there was no protest whatsoever. In fact, all was quiet outside the Benghazi consulate. No mobs, no furor over a lame internet video, nothing.

According to the new information, Ambassador Christopher Stevens had spent the entire day inside the compound, due to concerns about the 9/11 anniversary. He said goodnight to a Turkish diplomat, escorted him out the front door of the building, then went back inside and prepared to turn in for the evening.

An hour later, the night erupted in gunfire, explosions, and chaos. They sealed the building, contacted the embassy in Tripoli, and alerted the U.S. rapid reaction force which was located a mile away. Inside one of the two main buildings, Stevens and computer specialist Sean Smith were sealed into a panic room with an armed security agent.

Eventually a heavily armed mob of attackers breached the grounds and fought their way into the building where Stevens was hiding. They tried to force open the secure room, but failed, so they doused the entire area with gasoline, and set it ablaze.

As heavy smoke filled the building, Stevens and his crew were forced to evacuate. They first went to a nearby bathroom and opened a window for air. Moments later, they decided to make a run for it. The security agent went first, drawing fire, but Stevens and Smith never made it outside. The agent tried to go back for them, but unable to locate either of the men. Eventually, he made his way to roof, where he collapsed from smoke inhalation after radioing the rapid reaction team to inform them of the situation.

When the team arrived, they pulled Smith’s body from the building, but never found Ambassador Stevens.

Other surviving members of the on-site personnel escaped the area in a harrowing chase through oncoming traffic that sounds like something out of a Jack Ryan adventure. RPG’s, AK-47’s, and grenades were leveled at them as they made their way to safety.

Around four A.M., reinforcements arrived from Tripoli, but were unable to accomplish much due to a barrage of incoming mortar attacks. The explosions took the lives of Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods.

How Christopher Stevens eventually wound up in a nearby hospital is still a mystery.

Without a doubt, the most puzzling thing about the attack is how, with all of this information, the Obama administration could have the audacity to go in front of the cameras and tell the bald-faced lie of a spontaneous uprising.

As one of the anonymous officials said: "The lethality and number of armed people is unprecedented. There was no attack anywhere in Libya -- Tripoli or Benghazi -- like this, so it is unprecedented and would be very, very hard to find a precedent like that in recent diplomatic history."

President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton surely had this information within hours - if not minutes - yet for weeks they kept insisting that the entire incident spun out of a protest over a YouTube video. In fact, they went so far as to create a now-infamous clip denouncing the film which was broadcast throughout the Muslim world.

This is either the most egregious display of incompetence in recent history, or it’s the greatest attempted cover up. Either way, the President and Ms. Clinton must be held accountable.

So far, their reprehensible desire to bury the truth has only served to dishonor the memories of those who gave their lives.

Pay attention, that boy at the back!! BAC has already started a thread about this.

Pay attention, fruitcake, the article I posted was published 10/10/12 and BAC's post was yesterday evening 10/9/12... so no, he didn't already post a thread about this article. We don't have a limit on the number of threads about a particular subject, I know you wish that were the case with something like this, but it's not. I happen to believe this is a pretty big fucking deal, and worthy of as many threads as people want to post about it. People need to know that this administration has paraded around lies for weeks on this, as they tried to cover their incompetent asses.

LOL..."we finally know what really happened..."

yeah right.

"Yesterday, on condition of anonymity, Senior State Department officials..."

Oh yeah...them anonymous sources are always the most reliable...NEXT!

"How Christopher Stevens eventually wound up in a nearby hospital is still a mystery."

Wait...I thought you said we finally knew what happened...

So except for the fact nobody will go on record and state for the record what really happened, AND that nobody seems to know how Christopher Stevens would up in a hospital, we FINALLY know what happened.

At Wednesday's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Chairman Darrell Issa's questioning made one thing certain: The Obama administration's initial explanation — that the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were directly related to Islamic rage over a YouTube video — becomes more troubling with each passing day.

Before questioning began, Army Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, former head of a Special Forces site security team who was closely involved with operational planning for security in the region, testified to the increasing attacks on Western interests in the months preceding the Benghazi attack. He traveled to Benghazi after a successful attack on the British ambassador's convoy, and was aware of online threats made against Mr. Stevens. And yet, months later, Stevens would die attempting to exit an escape hatch in a smoke-filled room. His would-be rescuers would then perish in a mortar barrage.

Referencing a July 9 cable from Mr. Stevens provided by State Department whistleblowers, Rep. Issa showed that Mr. Stevens requested additional security support but was denied by Charlene Lamb, deputy assistant secretary of state for international programs, ostensibly because it wasn't a formal request. Ms. Lamb maintained Wednesday that the U.S. Consulate had the "correct" amount of security on the day of the attack, even though, as Mr. Issa pointed out, the compound was overrun within minutes.

Perhaps most telling during Wednesday's hearing was the moment when Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., asked Ms. Lamb why she now refers to the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi as a terrorist attack but refuses to refer to the actual attackers as terrorists. He asked how it was that the State Department relied on local militia for security even though they were so unreliable that when they knew an attack was "imminent," they left. Her response was that it wasn't her place to judge. Regarding the quality of local security in Libya, there wasn't a clear answer in Wednesday's testimony.

The Obama administration's strategy to contain the growing Libya scandal now appears to hinge on the State Department's ability to play a shell game with timelines, contractors, subcontractors, unclassified documents and semantics as it pertains to the ambassador's requests for extra security. As it was with Mr. Issa's handling of the Department of Justice's Fast and Furious gunwalking scandal, however, his knack for getting to the heart of an issue cut through the obfuscation. When Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy was asked why a single piece of intelligence seemingly led the Obama administration to continue the false narrative that a Youtube video was the root cause of the Sept. 11 consulate attack, he had no answer. Regardless, the picture is becoming clear to American people.

interesting, the viability and integrity of anonymous sources is judged mainly upon the information being put out to the public. supporting information to ones party means good, negative anonymous information means bad. I guess that makes you a tool.

Except there is nothing whatsoever "anonymous" about actual testimony by very real people on Capitol Hill.

So what!! Different article, same subject.

So what!! Different article, same subject.

So what... how many threads are there on Iraq or Bush, or any number of things the left wants to yammer about? Since when do we only get one thread to discuss each topic? Is there some problem with bandwidth? If so, perhaps we can consolidate 98% of Jughead's threads?

So what does that prove?

How does it expose the "Libyan lie"?

So what does that prove?

How does it expose the "Libyan lie"?

At the risk of being repetitive....Zap is a freakin' pinhead in the extreme.....

If he watched the hearings and better yet, would watch Fox News and Bill O'Reilly, he wouldn't be nearly the stupid apologist for Obama that he is....

JH Chi..t....man....the jig is up, the party is over, the fat lady is done singing......

Your hero in the White House is either lying his ass off, very ignorant about whats going on , or galacticly incompetent.... more likely all three.....

You apoligizing and spinning to cover for him is ridiculous.....even Chris Matthews gets the picture.....

You make a fool out of yourself with your lame excuses and even lamer spin.......

So you voted for him to show you're not racist, now don't vote him and show you not stupid...

I see you're under the delusional impression that someone will be forced to testify

I see you're under the impression there aren't already hearings taking place before Congress, where officials ARE currently testifying.

I'm telling you, a US Ambassador is dead, and if Obama's state department was negligent, which it appears by every indication they were, this thing isn't going away. They might be able to temporarily cover it over like a cat turd in a litter box, but ultimately, someone will have to answer for this.

Security Officer on State Department Blocking Requests: ‘For Me the Taliban Is Inside the Building’

In a heated and dramatic congressional hearing today, witnesses who served with the U.S. diplomatic corps in Libya and pushed for a stronger security presence repeatedly faulted the State Department for standing in their way – one even referring to the State Department officials he described as obstructionist as if they were Taliban terrorists.
The former regional security officer in Libya, Eric Nordstrom, recalled talking to a regional director and asking for twelve security agents.
“His response to that was, ‘You are asking for the sun, moon and the stars.’ And my response to him – his name was Jim – ‘Jim, you know what makes most frustrating about this assignment? It is not the hardships, it is not the gunfire, it is not the threats. It is dealing and fighting against the people, programs and personnel who are supposed to be supporting me. And I added (sic) it by saying, ‘For me the Taliban is on the inside of the building.’”
Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Wood, the commander of a Security Support Team (SST) sent home in August – against his wishes and, he says, the wishes of the late Ambassador Chris Stevens – said “we were fighting a losing battle. We couldn’t even keep what we had.”
Nordstrom agreed, saying, “it was abundantly clear we were not going to get resources until the aftermath of an incident. And the question that we would ask is again, ‘How thin does the ice need to get until someone falls through?’”
As an example, earlier Nordstrom had said he was “specifically told, ‘You can’t request an SST extension. How I interpreted that was there was going to be too much political cost.”
But in another emotional moment, undersecretary of state for management Patrick Kennedy denied that politics played any role.
“I have been a career foreign service officer for 39 years,” Kennedy said when asked if political considerations trumped protocol. “I have served every president since Richard Nixon, I have directly served six secretaries of State, Democratic and Republican. On my honor: no. None.”
Wood said that when he heard of the attack on the Benghazi post on September 11, it was “instantly recognizable” that it had been a terrorist attack.
Why?
“Mainly because of my prior knowledge there,” Wood said. “I almost expected the attack to come. We were the last flag flying. It was a matter of time.”
