In the debate last night Romney said that Syria important because it is Iran's only ally in the Arab world and "their route to the sea." Here's a map of the Middle East:
A few things to note. First, Iran and Syria don't share a border. The "route to the sea" has to pass through Iraq or Turkey. Second, and more importantly, Iran has a huge coastline on the Persian Gulf, controls the eastern side of the Straights of Hormuz and has direct access to the Indian Ocean through the Gulf of Oman.
Strange.
