This makes me very happy.... House essentially tells the U.N. to go fuck itself 397-0

We really need to pull out of the U.N. they're nothing but a hinderence.

yeaaaaah but having that veto power and fucking up their shit is very useful as well. I think a good compromise is we don't listen to anything the U.N. says and keep our veto power to prevent them from doing stuff we don't like.

for US? the only reason the house voted no is because THEY want control of the internet.

honestly, true. But it's still better in the hands of the U.S. than giving countries like libya or iran or china a say in how it should be run. the U.S. at least probably wont stop free speech or other type of things. Plus there are plenty of huge companies in the united states with a lot of sway that want the internet to be open and unhindered (google, facebook, etc). Look how easily something like SOPA was crushed in one day (and keep in mind, SOPA before the protest was viewed as an absolute shoe-in bill that was going to pass)

Which is pretty much where the U.N fails, it's a fig leaf for the big powers to hide behind when they slap down little powers. It's like saying "the board approved this" when you have the only vote.

i just think it's adorable when cameroon or some other irrelevant country thinks they are playing with the big boys. It's like giving a 3 year old a cookie

So where did SOPA originate anyway, I don't recall that emanating from the UN? Anyway the dark forces behind SOPA aren't dead, they are just biding their time and rethinking the strategy.

Every year they take biding, the more opposition they'll face when they resurface, as another batch of internet age babies turns 18. They'll be lucky not to get dragged through the streets and hanged whilst video recorders roll in Youtube glory.

That's only possible up to a point. The world at large is hugely tolerant of North American immaturity but the United Nations general Assembly has an inbuilt safety mechanism which prevents crass stupidity from overwhelming them all. Here's how it works;
Should the Security Council itself conduct its business in a manner which threatens world peace- the ultimate goal of the entire UN organisation- then the General Assembly can, by vote, overrule any Security Council veto . Certainly, this would be a step of vast implication for the five veto-wielding permanent-member States , along with everybody else, but this safety mechanism in the United Nations structure anticipates any dangerous SC veto by any SC permanent member turned bad.
So, any SC veto-wielding member who chooses to disrupt the planet for its own ends can find itself with its veto rolled up and stuffed up its ass. As any serious follower of United Nations business is well aware there will be about 89% of the world's member States standing by for a turn with the mallet, in the case of the US of AIPAC.

If we stay in the UN we should veto everything. Even trivial things like accepting the minutes as read. Veto it.
