Sometimes wars don't "get us" things, and instead, it is a great sacrifice made on principle and not what we're getting out of it.

The advantage of spending about 30 days in major combat operations to totally annihilate NK, would be... not having to deal with them shooting off nuclear missiles and threatening our allies. Not being shook down by a thug every 6-8 months. And to some degree, a little bit of respect from other enemy countries, when they see what happens to people who fuck with the United States.

But why are we even talking about this? Purple Heart vet John Fucking Kerry is going to make everything right! ...We're going to do sanctions!

Tow OUR line? How about asking why we have to tow the line at all in this part of the world. We wouldn't ask China to deal with Mexico if they were the antagonist, would we? Why do we have to be world police in every situation? It's a regional problem.

And Dixie.... as far as our foreign debt? They make a hell of a lot more money off of us than we owe. They need us more than we need them

Just stating one of the benefits, you asked what was in it for us, and I was telling one of the things. Yeah, we kind of do need some street cred. You see, the tyrants in the Middle East see us as weak and don't take us seriously. What they respect is displays of military might, and really, that's about the only thing they will respect. They are SO totally not like you, and that has been the problem with us trying to deal with them.

If sanctions bothered them, they would have been effective over the years, and they haven't been. I don't think the leader cares. He is going to threaten and rattle sabres until he gets another "bonus" from the US to keep him quiet another 6 months. I'm just surprised that Cuba and other countries we are not willing to confront, don't do the same thing.

The only thing that will work is exactly what the american mindset could not envisage in a hundred years. The little man has got himself in a hole. He has only two ways out. He fires his rockets or he doesnt. If he does he will lose his country, if he does not he will lose his people.
But wait. Yes there is a solution.
Immediately enact the cease fire. All the present situation is doing is consuming money and endangering lives. The boy can the go to his people as the great hero to national rejoicing and rat flavoured ice-cream for all.
The west does not need to apply more sanctions - they dont work anyway. America can run down its troops, it has a fleet in Japan and Guam so the NK/SK border is pointless now. SK will use NK as a cheap labour market and Samsung products will be even cheaper.
Chinese saying: If you do not allow a trapped dog a way out, he will bite you.
Crises over, no loss of face. Money and lives saved.

You know why? Because war is a Pandora's box of unpredictability. Cheney thought Iraq would be 6 months - in & out. We go to war with NK, and who knows what happens? Maybe China sits it out, but maybe they don't. Maybe a nuke gets launched. A million people could die.

But no - Dixie & Granule have such "courage," because they're willing to take those kinds of risks, and send a bunch of other people into harm's way, to die.

Okay, we're discussing what can be done, and everything you come up with that is not invading and taking out the regime, has been tried and it didn't work. You want to cling to this notion that we can only use our military when we are attacked directly, is a bit on the shallow-minded side, what about our allies? What would be the point of ANY country being allied with the US, if they know the US is never going to help them defend their countries if attacked?

Cheney thought it may take 6 months to defeat Saddam's army... it took less than three weeks, most of them surrendered without us firing a shot. Now, dealing with the influx of alQaeda who flooded into Iraq after we invaded (if they weren't there before), that took a while, and the insurgents put up a bit of a fight, and we lost some lives. But defeating Iraq and Saddam was a piece of cake, and Cheney actually over-estimated.

The deal with North Korea is not much different from the bully situation in school. We can keep giving NK our lunch money, and they will continue to act like bullies, or we can do what everyone has always done to deal with a bully, and pop the son of a bitch in the kisser. Nowadays, we have all these lefties running around emoting about "stop the bullying" and I can teach you how to end your bully problem in about 2 minutes. Hurts your knuckles for a bit, you may need an ice pack, but you'll end your bully problem. Guaranteed to work, every single time.

To deal with NK, I would put a few warships around the peninsula, a couple of aircraft carriers, and deploy a few hundred thousand troops to SK. Then I would (as president) announce that we will view any missile launch as a breach of the ceasefire agreement, and promise retaliation. If they still launched, I would unleash a hell on them that the world has never seen. Using our state of the art technology to turn NK into a grease spot. In less than 30 days it would all be over, and we'd never have a problem out of NK again. Afterwards, I would send a one-word memo to the president of Iran... "Next?"

I don't know if you were drunk when you wrote this, but I am having difficulty understanding a damn thing you said.

Bullies intimidate because they get away with it, because people are afraid to confront them. In all my years of school, I had two run-ins with bullies. But before the bully could actually bully me, he got a face full of my knuckles. The first one was in 3rd grade, and I literally knocked the bullies front teeth out. He had to go through the rest of the year snaggle toothed like a 1st grader, which was pretty humiliating to a bully. The other was in high school, and a bully who was at least twice my size. I was afraid on that one, it took a lot of building up my courage to act, and when I finally hit him, it was so hard I shattered a bone in my hand. I knocked him out, and thought I had killed him. But guess what? He never bothered me again, in fact, he never bothered anyone again. That ended his bullying career for good. Interestingly enough, I am friends with him now, he is a youth minister at his church, and turned out to be a pretty good person.

Now, I am not telling all of this to brag or crow, but to illustrate a point. There is really only one thing that works with bullies.
